Hi all,
I'm looking at either getting a mk 2 Cupra R or MK3 Cupra what's everyone's opinions?
Eg- speed, enjoyment, remap options?
Also if I got a MK2 Cupra R can you change the stereo from the dab one to full sat nav one easy?

Thanks for your opinions in advance

They are both great cars but before we can answer the question what do you want from the car.

Are you just after big power, Are you looking to build a track car or do you just want a family runaround that also is a wolf in sheeps clothing.

And what sort of money do you want to spend on buying and upgrading the car.

My vote is for the 280 I have no plans to ever sell mine its far to much fun.

The 280 Stage one (just needs a map no other hardware) will give you 375 bhp with no other hardware required.

Both cars with that sort of map will need decent rubber to keep the power on the street and the 280 should have an upgraded dog bone mount to stop wheel hop.

I also think the 280 is better on Fuel that the MK2, I would personally only consider the DSG Box

However there is a price difference in buying the cars and from what i have seen you can buy a mapped car and save yourself some cash (as you never get back what you put into it).

I have a stage 3 map on my 280 and Fuel is high 30's on the motorway and 10/11 on a track day when you are really pushing it so its not going to kill you on petrol (although you will need to use V Power or Tesco Momentum).

If you get the right car the 280 Comes with lots of goodies, Heated Seats, Adaptive Cruise Control, LED Lights (Facelift cars have better LED's), Limited Slip Diff and Dynamic Chasis control (comfort, sport or full blown Cupra that changes gear box, engine, steering, suspension).
The MQ Series has a good module system so there is lots of stuff you can turn on using VCDS/OBD11 including adjusting the Limited Slip Diff
The car comes with lots of safety features and if you want to know what its like driving check out my fav video

This is a drivers car and is a lot of fun, DSG Farts are great but I would suggest getting an open code air intake system as it gives you great feedback in the cabin without being in your face.

However i am very biased, You should take both cars out for a drive first to see how the feel to you and also talk to insurance companies to see relative cost's

For the MK2 Check out this build thread https://forums.seatcupra.net/index.php?threads/bye-fr-hello-speed-blue-mk2-cupra-r.435417/ its a great car.

IMO this is really a no-brainer. If you have the budget for a Mk3 then get a Mk3

Budget aside I don't think there are any areas where a Mk2 could be regarded as the better choice

As above, it depends on budget / what you are looking for. The MK2 Cupra R came in manual only. And yes, the 280 comes with loads of gadgets you won't get on the MK2 (adaptive cruise control being the one I wish I had). Also, you'll spend a lot of money on the MK2 getting power that could be done by a simple software map on the MK3.

To see what I've done with mine, you can check my readers ride and FAQs for more info:

I used to have a speed blue Mk2 Cupra R that was remapped to about 315 bhp. Lovely car and I really miss that colour, the seats were pretty cool too and it was a lot more noticeable than my 280.

However, the 280 moved the game on a huge amount, in pretty much every way. It’s also the perfect, quiet family car. A quick remap, a £26 bush, decent tyres and the 280 is insanely quick on both road and track. My YouTube vids give some ideas of exactly how quick it is on the track against some pretty fast cars SteA200sx :)

Nice videos it definitely moves what's your output after a stage 1 remap?

I heard that dsg's gearboxes couldn't handle more power and torque but yours fly's :)

The DSG is awesome, I was a die hard manual fan before. Excepting the odd one (including theoldboy in his rather fantastic Cupra who had a failure), there are lots of people running these DSG boxes on very high power MQB cars without issue; lots more power and torque than I’m running. :)

Having a mk2 Cupra R I can safely say that in my opinion the mk2 has better colour choice but the MK3 is much better suited for mapping.

I got my MK2 because its the car I'd always wanted to own within a normal person's budget... Now I've had it I would get a MK3 Cupra ST I think... My cars only done 41k miles and it's 8 years old and stock but it still makes me smile every time I look at it.

The MK3 is much more of a sleeper I think.

It's all down to personal preference.

@theoldboy is biased and he has good reason to be. I’ve seen heard and sat in his car and it is a beast. No doubt about it!!!

Have a look at @theildboy’s Thread and you will see he started off with a great car and improved on it to his Style and Taste.

I’m a little biased too as I have a Mk3 300 which is Stock apart from some subtle OBDeleven and cosmetic changes.

and a very nice paintjob, of the current crop of colors I would say that Maypack has the best (and that hurt) but I would also agree with @Jimbobcook that the MK2 have better choices and it also has to be said better names for the colors as well.

But as we have all said it comes down to how much you want to spend on the car up front and then modding afterwards along with running cost.
