Hi,

I need to replace my rear struts and my passenger front strut and spring on my 2009 2.0TDI FR.
I have searched lots of forum posts and google searched and found one guy who says that you need to replace some bolts as they are one use only? I cant remember if they are the hub bolts or Axle bolts?
And lots of posts where no one changes any bolts, or doesnt say.
This is a weird setup on this car, on my previous car it was just two strut bolts, and they needed replacing only due to age and rust not because they were one use only.
I have got a strut spreader tool being delivered. The front strut I have to fit is second hand and is assembled ready to fit.
The shocks for the rear appear simple to do if the guides i have found are for my model.
Does anyone have any advice?
Cheers
Martin

I rarely change the bolts, I did mine on my 2008 fr over 50k ago and no problem.

Definitely get the hub spreader tool, scrap round the bottom of damper with a pick, then do be shy with the wd40. Unplug the abs wire, undo the bracket if I rember right, tie wrap them up clear out the way. Remove pinch bolt(you will need a tri-square tool) get small hub spreader, in then get bigger one in(rotate 90°) then chap the hub down. Should go down no problem buy if your having a hard time undo the 3 nuts holding ball joint to wish bone, crack hub nut, loosen shaft, that should free it all off to give you some play.

When your rebuilding hive the inside of hub a scrape on the lip at bottom where damper bottoms out, make sure to line up the inside lug on damper with slot on hub, put balljoint back on and jack up from under it, might need to chap the shock with pressure on Jack just to get it seated.

Hopefully that helps a bit

Cheers bud! I will leave it at the bits i have for the moment.
I didnt know there were different size hub spreaders?
I have ordered Spreader Socket Number 3424.
Did you mean - Dont be shy with the wd40? Or should I be carefull with its use for some reason?

Yeah that's the hub spreaders I've got, the long one is slightly narrower. I start with it then get the short one in.

Sorry I ment just attack it with lots of wd40. Just remember and move all abs wires and sensor out the way before chapping with multi-tool(hammer ).

If you have bought a second hand unit have you made sure it's correct damper size, yours should be 55mm I'm sure and lower spec cars have 50s if I rember right.

Lol i presumed you meant lots of wd40, I was racking my brain trying to think of reasons not to use liberal amounts but getting nowhere!
I ordered the unit specifically as it says seat leon 1p 2.0 tdi fr 170ps, but i have just measured it across the bottom of the strut and it is 50mm.

I'm pretty sure yours should be 55mm that is fitted to your car. I would definitely check before stripping it down.

lol no idea what i did wrong but it is 55mm, PHEW!

Somehow I read it wrong.
I was really annoyed for a bit then because this strut is in really good nick and off a really low mileage car, shipped from germany all in for £27! :funk:

Sorted then

I could have sorted you out with my original stuff if you were stuck.

Good luck fitting them, any problems give me a shout and I'll see if I can help

This has been a really good forum so far, a bit quieter than im used to but very helpfull and no sign of rampant keyboard warriors which is a bonus.

I don't usually post much on forums but since I've basically rebuilt and upgraded most parts on my Leon I have a fair bit of knowledge, so I try help out where I can.

I definitely agree that this forum doesn't have many trolls and pretty helpful and a lot of good people that know there stuff.
