Tyres and strange noise

Hi all, I've just replaced 3 of my tyres (2 on front and 1 rear). I had Bridgestone and have swapped to Goodyear Eagle F3 asymmetrics. I've had to have them re balanced as the car and steering wheel were vibrating at speed. That is fine now but when I hit 60-65 I get this humming noise. I think it's from the front left hand side. Any ideas what it could be? Do I need to get the tyres checked again? I have a 65 Leon st with the 18" titanium pack wheels. Any help most appreciated.

That's interesting as I am suffering the same issue on my seat 1.6 110bhp but the noise is heard between 40 -70 and goes up and down with speed variation. Seems to be coming from the front drivers side. I thought wheel bearing but car has only done 39K? I am going to swap the tyres around to see if it moves.

I am now in a golf but have done exactly the same swap - Bridgestone Potenza to Goodyear Eagle F3. I thought I was maybe imagining a noise increase when I changed tyres but it is exactly as you describe... an odd humming noise. Starts about 65mph and actually disappears about 80mph.

I got mine at Kwikfit. Where did you get yours?

I had mine done by tyres on the drive. They had to come back after fitting and rebalance them as the steering wheel and car was vibrating at speed. This part is fine now but hit 60 and the noise is there. It is definitely worse on new tarmac. I think I will have to get them back again.

Can I ask if the noise you get is like a pulsating vibration?

A friend has just changed to Eagle F1's and is experiencing similar noises. Would be good to be able to blame the tyres rather than a mechanical issue.

Thanks.

I've put it down to the tyres as my car is 18mths old with 17000 on the clock but didn't make any noise before tyres fitted. The noise is a mid range type of hum. It seems to be in rhythm and you can hear a slightly louder hum at certain points, kind of like say if in a clock it makes a different noise at 12 o'clock! I hope this makes sense!

I think I get what you mean ☺ it does sound like it could be the tyres then.

Tyres on the drive coming back out to me on Wednesday. Fingers crossed they will sort, they have been pretty good so far with their customer service.

Update- Tyres on the drive came back out. Technician joined me for a drive and agreed he could hear the sound. He rebalanced all wheels, checked pressures and then we agreed to swap tyres round. Took the car out for a test drive and still got the noise. Can't fault tyres on the drive, their service has been excellent. So still haven't got a clue what the noise is, gonna want until service and see what Seat have to say. Just not sure why changing tyres started the noise.

Tyres just wearing down their intial protective layer? Eg...the red and green and blue lines new tyres usually have. How many miles since you got the new tyres? Perhaps give it 500 mile or so. I guess it would go away by then?

I did wonder about this too at first but have now done 700 miles so think they should, hopefully, have started to wear in.

They are a great tyre - the grip is great and at speeds other than 60 mph they are super! Fingers crossed yours are ok.

What did you think of Tyres On The Drive in general? it was my the first time using them, the price was very good especially as I got £5 cashback from top cash back, not having to sit in a waiting room and getting it done at home is a god send especially for the wife who would have had to take our 2 year old with her.
The only thing that was disappointing is that I told my wife to ask the technician to change the worn fronts and then swap them fronts and rears over so I could more quickly wear out the old Bridgestones from the rear. He said he would but that he would have to tell the office and they would charge me more money for that.
I have never been charged for swapping tyres around before!

I've used them before and have been pleased. Customer service was good and technician really tried hard to solve the noise problem, he came out for a drive and waited after swapping wheels round to see if it was cured. Sadly, it's not though!

Damn, I was really hoping you'd find something out! Perhaps the tread pattern on these tyres just doesn't agree with something on the Leon/Golf...

Me too! 60 mph annoys the hell out of me! Especially as the road to work is a 60 limit a road with average speed cameras.
