Is either 0w-30 or 5w-40 ok for PD170??

My leon needs a top up of oil but all local places in my town only have 0w-30 and 5w-40.

Would either of these be ok for a top up as it's on the min level of dipstick. Its only temporary as will be having a service within next month.

I can't say for sure that it wouldn't be OK putting the wrong one in - but I'd always go with what it says in your book. I'm pretty sure it's 5w30 VW504/507 spec for the PD170.

If you were in a pinch and your engine was out of oil, wrong oil surely is better than no oil, but you can pick up a 1L bottle of oil for under a tenner in most places - plenty for a top up.

My local Tesco has a surprisingly big selection, if that's any use?

You need a 504 00/507 00 oil for a diesel with DPF. It is worth checking your handbook because from memory there is an allowance for using other specifications of oil for top-up "in case you can not find the right specification", but check before committing to this.

Most 504 00/507 00 oils are 5W-30, there are a couple of 0W-30 ones out there but pretty rare.

Have you got a friendly garage or a VW specialist near you? They'd probably give you a small top-up for a few quid.

Failing that, you got Amazon Prime? They've got the proper Castrol LL 5w-30 at £8 for a 1 litre bottle available for next day delivery.
