So, the difference between the ST280 and ST290 is only the ecu mapping?

I'm not 100% mate, but I'm pretty sure it is the new system because it's identical sounding to the new 290 hatch. No official source of info, but I shouldn't think it's the 3 silencer set-up.

Hmm, I wonder if it will be possible to get the new software in an old 280?

Thinking of ordering a 290 ST. Must say I'm confused about what the exhaust will sound like. One thread says it's no different to the 280 ST (which I test drove and was slightly disappointed with sound from within the cabin) and this thread seems to confirm that the ST now sounds like the new 290 SC and Hatch variants.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Preferably someone who has a 290 ST. Many thanks.

I believe the 290 uses the golf r exhaust which has smaller back boxes than the 280 exhaust. Pretty sure I read it equates to a 6kg weight saving on the exhaust

Thanks Jarre. It's the 290 ST I'm particularly interested in. Anyone else with any insight? Thanks

Sorry to say but 500 miles in (coming from a Golf R7 DSG & into a 290 ST DSG) the sound is not great. Not really getting any DSG farts on the upshifts or anything on the overrun. Guessing this is purely something that occurs on the 3 & 5 door variants that has their exhausts revised.

I'd have to agree, cant get any pops, the farts are quite minimal compared to the videos I have seen on youtube stating how easy it is to get the pops when lifting off at 4.5k revs. I am only 200 miles in yet but i cant see how that'd make too much difference

I thought you had to put it into cupra every time you start it?

I wonder if it suffers the same setting glitch as the R then.

In the R if you have the engine running and you select R mode the exhaust valves open. If you then turn the car off, next time you start it, it will still be in R mode but the valves will be shut. You have to reselect R to open them again.

The weather is so shitty here i can barely enjoy or try my new car.
But when i did last week on idle it burbled nicely, considering the 4k rev limiter.

The sound inside is very nice and the head turning has to mean someone hears the car outside :)

I'm the manual it's says it is for economy reasons why you have to reselect it
