Sat Nav update

So my car is due it's second year service soon and even though it specifies software updates are installed in the second year service I can guarantee because they change the SD card, that would be classed as a hardware change, thus making it expensive.
My question is for is it worth updating?
Has anyone paid for the privilege of "updated maps"
My nav system hasn't been updated since the day it left the factory and I have driven on new roads where the nav hasn't recognised them and I'm certain I'm not the only one with this. I just want to know how up to date it really is and if those who have had it updated actually would recommend it
Cheers

My service plan on my old car was only £8 odds a month, now the Leon is over £20 so hope that this is included.

Just tell them you are happy to keep the original card and they can reflash that ;-)

I'm interested to know what happens.

I would be expecting a response of there's the door!
It seems that it's quite a lottery with the cost since I have never seen it advertised, which should open up door for bartering
I turned down the service plan which is probably quite a novice move, I hate the whole idea of being tied into a deal with the devil for there still to be clauses for them to charge you more...

We've just bought a Leon ST FR Connect which had version 0122 installed on it. Luckily it is the Navi System plus, so is updateable by yourself however the new update from November 2015 still didn't have the new road layout from where I live in the Netherlands and that was finished already finished back in May last year or thereabouts.

Problem with navigation these days as it never tells you what is updated, only that there is an update available. With them all having Western Europe maps, that update could be for one country that you will never ever go to meaning you paid for nothing.

If you like, I've just installed the latest version from November, if you give me a few of the roads you are missing, I can give it a whirl and see if they show up now.

I hope you don't mind me jumping in on this thread but hoping someone can help me with a Sat Nav query. I bought a new Seat Leon FR on 1st March. When I have selected a route option in the Sat Nav and then gone to route information it does not display a route list. My manual says it "gives route information". I downloaded an online version of the manual and it says there is a route list which tells you all the roads and sections on route. I am wondering if the online version is an old one and the software has been changed. Although you can see the route by looking at the map I have never had a Sat Nav that didn't give you a list with road numbers etc. Seat Customer Service were no help and just sent me a standard email saying take it to a dealer.

Any info appreciated.

Do you mean the screen that says something like no data available for this location?
I get that every single time I insert an address, POI or whatever, it was really annoying at first but I now blank it as it still takes me to the address I requested

Knowing that the new system is self updatable is such a kick in the teeth!
I appreciate it! They've built a few new roads near me but can't think of the names of them the last once to catch my eye was a new bypass in Formby which has added a corner in so the satnav goes crazy thinking you've crashed for half a mile until you rejoin the old road but I guess to be fair I shouldn't be so reliant on the system, it's taken me down many a wrong turn in the past!

No when you have selected a route a route button appears top right. if you select that it gives you a few options and one of the options is route information which should give a list of roads and sections on your route. Mine doesn't. It just tells you very brief info like fast route, time of arrival and there is no detail. You can go on to the map and see route but that isn't the same as seeing it broken down into roads, junctions, sections etc. I have had this on every sat nav I have ever had and the online version of the manual suggests it should be there. Would be interested to hear if you have it. Many thanks

Where is it clearly stated that satnav map updates will be applied at the 2nd service and that this is included in the standard 2nd service cost?

Our FR is due for its 2nd service in two weeks time and if I can get satnav map updates for free instead of the normal £180 fee then I am having it! :)

I haven't seen it stated anywhere apart from the accessories brochure mentioning that the price is POA so I highly doubt it's getting updated unless you part with your hard earned cash. I wanted to know if it was worth it but personally for way over £100, I cannot warrant that!

I think this only works if you have 'MapCare' which isn't available on UK Seat. I tried downloading the updated maps (I also have version 0122) and it would not update, I tried several methods still would not work, annoying because collected car December 2nd and new maps were released in November. Out of interest did you get a map card with your car or were the maps already on the Satnav hard drive?

Maps were already on the harddrive.

Looks very interesting and it can show POI which can be set and SPEDD Cameras
anybody had a cost yet

No not yet, I did email them about 15:50hrs with all my cars details and my location but no reply yet.

I suspect depending on price for this, that if you live close to them it might be a reasonable upgrade, I think they may even offer to to the job at your home, as they wanted your home location (and the vehicles Vin No) when making the initial enquiry.

They are based in Surbiton, just off the A3.

But at the end of the day its all down to price.

Today I updated the maps on my wife's (September 2014) Polo. Very easy job, apart from the hours it takes to download them from the Navteq website and the hour it takes to write them to the SD card from the car.

I understand that if I try this after September 2017 (the updates seem to appear in November) then it'll tell me I can't use the new maps as the price of the new VW includes only 3 years of updates.

I also understand that if I try the same with my (April 2015) Leon then it will immediately fail, as the price of the Leon includes no map updates. This is just one example of why a SEAT costs less than the (apparently) equivalent VW model. Other examples would include the poor screen resolution in my Leon, and the fact that the same maps are compressed onto an SD card of half the size, which shows worst in the unbelievable pronunciation of some English place names (e.g. for Worksop read "WORKSIP" !).

So am I likely to pay to have my satnav maps updated ? Certainly not while the cost is comparable to a new Tomtom that I am confident will do everything very much better. I am already planning how I'll use the storage slot below the aircon controls to create a mount for the Tomtom without needing to drive screws into my dashboard.

I think the YouTube link in Stepdey's post is a system for adding satnav where there was none previously, and as such it's very expensive as it adds all the hardware (except for screen of course). There's another one (or another seller of the same system ?) here.

Sadly the market for cheaper satnav upgrades for existing VAG satnavs will be smaller to the point where maybe no-one will bother.
