What Oil To Use?

Hi, I have a 2009 1.4 petrol model (naturally aspirated) and I'm wondering which oil to use for it.
I'm pretty sure it's 5W-30 but I'm not 100% sure can anyone who has an Ibiza with the same engine shed any light on this?
At them moment I'm looking to buy this minor service kit
http://www.seatpartsshop.co.uk/product/SEAT_Minor_Service_Kit-_All_Engine_Types_MINOR
It comes with 5W-30 but I want to make sure it's the correct oil before ordering.

Would 5W-40 oil be fine or is it too different? What is the difference between 5W-30 and 5W-40 anyway? (sorry for being rather clueless)

I don't think the filter is that one.
Regarding the oil I'm using 5W30.
It should be vw 501 01 / vw 502 00 / vw 504 00

I'm using Castrol Edge 5W30 FST and I'm satisfied with it.

Don't suppose you know what filter to use?
I'm guessing any sump plug is fine?
I'll take a look at the oil thanks.

What I was meaning is that the filter is this one:

audi-a2-1.4i-16v-oil-filter-wl7203-48140015-116-p.jpg

It is at the front of the engine, near the alternator.

I don't know about the sump plug

like DM222 has pointed out, it's a canister type filter, last one I got was £7 from a dealer.

VW504/VW 507 5W30 in our's running on Shell Helix.

Some after market references that fit this engine:

WIX -> WL7203
BOSCH -> 0451103318

Regarding the sump plug the last time they only changed the washer on my car... don't know if they are universal or something, that's a good question

That will fit, don't know if crosland is good, never heard of it but I'm not in the UK.

A little search and I found this

Many years ago Crosland were a real major player in the filter world. I sold them for over ten years. Crosland were then sold to Sogefi who own Fram, Purflux and a few others. Euro car parts bought the name only, no development, no technical back up, nothing. Just the name. Now they buy the cheapest filters from around the world you've never heard of box them and sell on the perceived quality of the name. Would you put the cheapest on your car ???

Don't know if that's true but I would feel more confident with bosch...

PS: I don't do my oil changes so I'm not an expert on the matter...

Right now I think I have mahle, from what I read they seem to be good too.

I tend to buy from VAG dealer, filter = 030 115 561 AN drain plug = N908 132 02.

I also use 5W-30 though dealer tends to use 5W-40 - so either will be okay.

By the way, I tend to agree with what has been written above wrt parts places using "good" names and putting inferior stuff in these branded boxes. Lucas is another name that gets abused in the same way for the same reasons, greed and fool the mugs.

What is the difference between 5W-30 and 5W-40 anyway?

All oil gets thinner at high temperatures but oil which has two numbers (like 5W-30) is called multigrade oil in which this tendency to get runnier at high temperatures is reduced. It still gets runnier when hot, however.

The numbers indicate the viscosity or lack-of-runniness with high numbers indicating high viscosity, low numbers low viscosity.

A 5W-30 oil has the viscosity of a 5 viscosity oil at low temperature and the viscosity of a 30 viscosity oil at high temperature.

So if you compare 5W-30 with 5W-40 then you can say that at low temperatures they are the same but at high temperatures the 5W-40 will be thicker; the 5W-40 having less tendency to get runny at high temperature.

Actually there are more important considerations than just the viscosity so if I were you I'd use an oil approved by VW for your engine and that probably means one meeting VW spec. 502-00 or 504-00 depending on the service interval, short or long. The handbook will tell you.

Edit:-
Opie Oils have a good doc. here:-

I've just realised that that picture is showing a typical service minor service kit for a petrol engine Seat, you have to quote your reg number at check out, and that will make sure the kit is correct, also it does say that if you don't quote your reg number your order will not be completed, so I'd think that they are making sure that you do get the right parts for that car.

They are not mugs, it does not help them at all if you get the wrong bits sent and you will find that all or most parts places and service places in the UK at least, identify your actual car by its reg number as that is easier than the customer miss-quoting the car's VIN.

Yes, you are right, sorry about that, that kit should fit after all.
I didn't saw that.

Never heard of it, make sure it has one of the specifications I mentioned above.

Quote from another site:- "Manufactured in the UK by: Tetrosyl Ltd"

I've not heard of it either! Maybe that should read "Marketed in the UK by : Tetrosyl Ltd"

Oil is one of the things I never save money on...

Anyway sometimes this oils are made by big companies who wan't to sell cheaper and don't want to be a cheap brand...

I wouldn't even try and save money on oil with random brands, it's going into your engine after all. Castrol every time.
