What causes timing chain to slip on 1.2

Hi
My 2003 Ibiza packed in about 3 weeks ago but not been able to look at it until last week .
So it seems like the timing chain has slipped as I've put the crankshaft locking tool in but the camshaft locking tools won't fit as there about a quarter a turn out.
So I pushed the tensioner back and loosened the chain and moved the camshaft into position and locked them up.
I marked it up and moved the engine round by the crankshaft and it seems to be turning OK.
Reason I've done that is I wanted to turn the engine over to do a compression test to see if the valves are ok.
What's causing the chain to slip on these engines is it the tensioner and if so can I just replace that and as the chain has once been changed and looks OK.
I don't want to spend a great deal of money on this car as its a bit of a runner.
I'm a novice mechanic and am following haynes and this site :) and tbh I'm still not 100% its the chain slipped lol
Thanks for any advise

You need to work out if the modification kit has been fitted to that engine. I don't have a 1.2 3 cylinder engine car, but I believe that the chain dampers were lengthened as well as other things - maybe new chain cover in a bid to control the chain, which in itself might have been improved and as you say the chain tensioner.

I'd hope that there is a thread in this forum covering this problem as it did happen a few times (I think that I'm being kind there, though a few tech have said "never seen one that had damaged itself")

Thanks for that I gave a receipt from the previous owner showing its had loads of engine work done.
Need to dig it out to see what it was.
Looking at Google pictures though mine looks like standard ones
Cheers for the reply :)
