I've just joined and this is part of the reason. I put this info on my introduction but I guess this it'd the proper place for it.

My Daughter has just got her first Seat. 1.2 Ibiza 2003.
First drive home no problems, then an intermittent eml.

Read codes then cleared them in case they were old codes.
EML is back on now and the following codes show.

Re read the codes today as the fault light is on..

16687- Cylinder 3 misfire Detected
P0303 - 35-10- - - Intermittent

16804 Catalyst System, Bank 1 Efficiency Below Threshold
P0420 -35-00

17658 Fuel level too low
P1250- 35-00

I only read the Engine codes.

I'm thinking plug or coil pack on 3 but would that give me the catalyst problem?

Is there a definitive answer to the low fuel code as I keep getting conflicting info from Google.

I posted a similar thread on another Seat forum but after initial interest answers have stopped......and I've heard this is the best forum for Seat Ibiza owners.

Thanks for reading this..(twice if you read my newbie post!)

Plug or coilpack is a good shout, when was the car last serviced??

The catalyst one could be the cat itself, or the lambda it's referencing.

It could also be the cars been on far too many short journeys and the cats abit dirty.
My brother gets that one alot because his drive to work is under 5 miles.

Thanks for the reply.
I can't really answer the question about servicing, so I guess the answer is not recently.

My daughter's Ka finally died (to my relief, I hated it) and she needed a car for her new job so it was all a bit rushed for her. Car drives quite nicely and certainly didn't struggle on the motorway coming home.
I wonder if the misfire could be causing the cat issue.

New plugs (3) and coil pack on number 3 will be my starting point. It did have an oil change before she picked it up and the oil looks OK so I may leave that until the weather is a little drier and she has some more money out I'll end up paying for the bits as well!!!!!

I can't find any definite info on the low fuel one though!

Thanks.

A set of plugs and a coil pack for no. 3 I think then I'll clear the codes and see what else comes up!

And they say Vectras are unreliable!!!!!! ( although there is 6 years and 4 grand difference).

Slightly different subject but when looking on flee bay for coil packs there are two different things listed. A square box type thing and the plug top coil packs.

Simple question what is what? Last petrol i had used a coil and a distributor.......oil burning is less complex when it comes to ignition!!!!

I've got the same car, although mines a year newer. So I would imagine that it's the same type of coil, being the coil on plug option (3 separate coil packs, one for each cylinder). But I'm sure if you nip to your local parts retailer I.e eurocarparts etc, they'll tell you based off the reg, and the price won't be much different if at all, coils aren't exactly big money parts.

Just had a look on eurocarparts website, and it's 13.80 per coil, best part is not having to wait for them to arrive, just go pick them up!

Plugs and coil pack ordered will fit them on the weekend, clear any codes and then wait and see what happens.
Thanks for the replies, this seems a much more active place to come with problems!

This might sound weird but when you install the coils check the wiring, my parents had a Nissan that had an intermittent misfire and it was caused by a damaged cable

Thanks. I will keep this updated this once I've got it all fitted.

Edit, rather than new post.... Plugs fitted, coil fitted, car ticking over much smoother, had it running for 30 odd minutes whilst I removed the wildlife from the pollen filter and it was very smooth. New air filter and pollen filter next week.
Daughter happy, no codes showing, we will wait and see.

Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately I know ecp well. Yes, you can order and pick up but then you wait in line behind all the others and then find they haven't always good what you ordered and paid for..... Maybe its just my local ecp depot

Stupid thing to say!

So far so good, at least I've not had any phone calls yet.

Hopefully it was just a bad coil pack.

Time as they say.............

Grand. :D

If the P0420 comes back, it may be worth having a look at the rear lambda and ensuring it's tightened up fully, the wiring is ok all the way from the sensor, through the small connector box, and into the plug under the engine bay. Finally giving it a clean can sometimes help although it's rarely a permanent fix.

Hopefully the misfire was throwing the code and you won't see it again.

Well one week later and the misfire codes have gone but the P0420 is back. Not going to worry too much about it. If the cat is fubared then it is and nothing will help. If not then the problem is a sensor and it can't get worse.

Am I misguided?

I ran mine for 2 years with a P0420. The EML is annoying but it really is just a cat warning. Providing the cat is OK (if it passes an MOT emissions test then I assume it is not too bad) then it's probably just the sensor.

Eurocarparts do a Bosch sensor for about £45, although it took me 3 hours of cursing and swearing to remove the old one from my exhaust :)
