Putting aside all the legal and moral reasons why you should not buy rip-off copies, if you buy the proper VCDS from an authorised seller - and there are many in UK, you will get supported for the lifetime of that product, and when the time comes for RossTech to replace it with an evolved tool, your old version can be traded in. You sound like, so far, you don't have a great car issues and just want to enjoy the benefits of being able to change things slightly in your car, and that is fair enough, but unfortunately, in the future, you will probably want to be able to find out what is going wrong with your car, and either try to fix it or make a judgement on if it is safe to continue to use it. This is where these scan tools come into their own and your £270+ spend will pale into insignificance.
If you plan to work your way through/up the VAG range of cars, getting a proper copy of VCDS will keep working for a very long time, I've had VAG COM since 2002, then traded it in for VCDS, so my total spend of maybe £185 + maybe £155 to upgrade, has kept me up to date for 12 years and going looking after/fixing 5 cars and some friends cars - remember, VCDS can operate as an OBD2 generic engine code reader for any other marques that are playing the game wrt OBD2 code designations!
One last thing, the power that this tool gives me to talk to my cars, kind of keeps me owning VAG cars, because after having this, I would feel lost if I could not check the car faults - duff garage man says "blah blah £1000 mate!" now how can you argue against that when you have nothing to back it up?
Edit:- BTW the "409" being referred to was the final update of VAG COM which used a dumb dongle, ie security/license was in the S/W not the dongle. There was never any possibility to use that tool with "410" > issues of what became VCDS, it became the "freeware" version of S/W also known as VCDS LITE - ie light weight VCDS, so that advert is a bit confusing, though going to China and wringing someone's neck just is not going to work as they sell rubbish food!
