What would you say is a fair price for having 4 tyres mounted on alloys, no fitment to a car?

The seat dealership has quoted me £48 inc. VAT, but cannot fit me in on a saturday (when i can next make it down, as i work during the week) for a month or so's time. Anyone had any experience of the dealers doing this, do they do a decent job?

My other option, is to get a guy who i typically always goto for work, independent garage, i know he does a top job, but its a 45 min drive away. He has quoted me £60 inc. VAT for the lot. Can do this for me tomorrow...

Ive never had to pay for just fitment before, and i appreciate alot of places dont like to do it incase they wreck the tyre on mounting (so ive been told) so im unsure on the typical cost for this. Is the Seat dealer doing me a good deal, or is Seat charging book price and my independent garage is adding abit on top since they arent making anything from wheels/tyres from me (Seat already got the sale with the alloys).

Have had bad experience with another garage fixing a puncture previously (when it shouldnt have been fixed - too close to outer edge), then when they re-mounted the tyre they didn't balance it up again, so it vibrated like mad at speed (still to this day they swear it doesnt need to be done), they then told me to move that tyre to the back to fix the vibration. To top it all off, they mounted my alloy in the tyre machine wrong, used the clamps u should use for steels and left me with 4 sets of gripper marks on the inside of the wheel! [:@]

So, should i hold out for my Seat dealer to do the job - pay less but they could mess it up. Or drive 1.5 hours round trip to get a garage i trust to do the work for slightly more, but i get them done tomorrow - lol! Also, how long does it take to do 4 wheels, Seat rekon its an hour job

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Ben

I've paid wildly different prices depending on where I can get the work done each autumn and spring, cheapest was £10 and a pack of biscuits to a backstreet garage that was having a slow morning before their tea break, while the most expensive was a shocking £80 at my local village garage which also overinflated the tyres by 50%, making the car almost uncontrollable to drive. A nearby independent tyre fitting place charged around £48 at £12 per corner, and plenty of places won't even bother fitting tyres they haven't sold you.

It's getting easier to get self-supplied tyres fitted as online tyre buying becomes more widespread, but also more difficult to find somewhere available to change tyres over when the temperatures drop as winter tyres become more common. I'd guess you'd be as well doing it at the dealer for that price, if you're only getting it done once. Or try finding an independent garage to do it on the cheap with the understanding that you have less comeback should something get damaged during fitting.

Oh, and I'd not expect to be waiting more than 30 mins, the tyre fitting garage near me that's set up just for that can change all 4 in about 10 mins.

Dealer mechanics should be able to do it. And if they mess it up they have to pay for damages. So id take the cheaper option.

Just a quick question, sorry to jump in, the centre caps of the wheels, are they a sticker or do the pop out? And what size are they? I've seen some on eBay that are 58mm

Knowing VAG, they should pop out. The alloys i've ordered come with the centre caps with part number 6LL601171 UFT.

I have just paid £40 for fitting and balancing of my four winter tyres at a local garage, which I think is reasonable. The local tyre fitter wanted £15 pound per tyre and balancing would be extra!
The Seat dealers price sounds Ok, if that includes balancing. Personally the most I would pay is £15 per wheel fitted and balanced.

From my experience, I'd reckon that the only winter tyres currently available will be from last year's batch, so don't worry about that. I seem to remember that winter tyre manufacturing, for Michelin at least, does not start until late September, I was told this by Costco as they order direct from Michelin - other than any stock Costco hold in their individual outlets.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all your help with this. I took your advice and decided on getting the dealer to fit the tyres, at £48 it seemed very reasonable. I went to collect my Alloys from parts on Friday last thing - made a trip over to the service desk to see if they had any better dates, and a cancellation had been made for Saturday morning :funk:

So, Bundled everything in my boot on Saturday, handed over the keys and an hour later they were finished! Must admit, they've done a fantastic job, balance weights have been put on tidily, and i'm pleased with the results. Gave them a clean and added a layer of the Supagard alloy wax that came with our Leon MK3, dressed the Tyres with Autoglym Tyre Shine, and the wax'y white coating seems to have come away from the sidewalls nicely.

Heres some pics, incase these help anyone else in the future!

I have noticed that the centre caps are pretty brittle, the plastic clips have snapped when installed. i'm not sure if this was the guy who fitted them, or whether they have been sat in a warehouse for a while. I'm gonna contact parts, see if they can replace them or if not just order some more - they came with the wheels so cant complain too much!

Here is mine with 15" Seat alloys and winter tires. It fits over the stock brakes, barely.
