Re maps, clutches & 0-60 query!

Hey
Thinking I'll put some money into my ibiza instead off buying a second faster car, so wanna know:

A remap will see a pd130 from 130 to 160 hp and 230 to 299 ftlb torque..is this correct?
What sort of 0-60 will I see?

Clutch is liable to fail...sooooo what upgraded clutches are there? And will the clutch be good, ie not fail like the oem one? How much will this be?

I'll be having an exhaust before the remap anyway, and also finally:

Mpg...some say more, some say less, what have u found? I regularly see 65-75mpg on motorways at 70(ish!) mph depending in weather. Or maybe I'll have the remap done, see how it goes and have one of those boxes installed to have standard maps running for my commute.

Inter coolers and uprated boost pipes - what do you recommend and prices again...I need to do something with the boost pipes because I blow the standard ones on standard setup lol.

Erm think I've thought of everything (?!) please let me know anything else I might have overlooked and if you have done anything similar please let me know prices, producers, power gains etc. :)

U won't see a 0-60 increase

But you will see a 30-100 increase

Mpg will go down probably unless u drive like a granny and if that's the case, then don't bother remapping

Revo and APR software enable you to swap between maps but I don't know if they do one for your engine

Wouldn't get a tuning box as they're crap

And in regards to clutch, go for a Sachs one

Thanks for the reply!
Ok so no 0-60 increase shame there's no more oomph below 30 tho, hate first gear or lack thereof lol.

As for mpg, I had to sell my fun petrol and only bought this car as my commute went from 80 miles a day to 180 and the petrol was costing £250 a week whereas this beast is half that! So going from something fun n fast I'm now desperate to have a car that can do the sensible granny drive to work but still be fun at the weekend :)

I'd want to be able to swap between maps ideally if the mpg will go down purely because of the commute cost - If it rises I'll start wishing I'd kept the petrol I had lol!

Thabks for clutch details - what sort of price are they?

I'm sure the 0-60 will be better. Just look at the figures for the 130 and 160bhp and you will see the difference. I could tell the difference in first and second gear from my old Cupra tdi160 and my mates 150 tdi leon.

Different gear ratios???

Yeah that might have made a difference it definitely Made my economy worse As my car reved 500 rpm higher in 6th which made it 10 mpg worse. My car just had much more punch when the turbo came though.
30 bhp is quite an increase so it should be noticeable in every gear.

0-60 will be better, but you'll always struggle to actually put the power down, having said that it's not exactly very often you do go 0-60 flat out...

My OEM original clutch is still holding up great after 100k miles, 25k+ of those remapped (to around 160bhp, which is a pretty mild map for these engines, you can get close to 190bhp, just expect things to break if you do lol).

MPG, not really noticed a change in real world terms, and my use is pretty much the same as yours.

Thanks Brett! That's really interesting to know! Nice to find another person with a same car n mileage uses.
Yeh true lol but nice to have the 0-60 power there for those cheeky moments (slip roads!!) :D

Realistically though, you're not starting from 0, you'll be rolling in either 2nd or 3rd gear - and this is definitely where you feel the difference.

Hi Little Red

Hopefully I could shed some light on your questions as I've had two remaps on my PD130, one poor, one excellent.

Gains

Most remaps are usually between 160-170bhp with some claiming figures as high as 180bhp (Take this as a pinch of s**t) and torque increases to between 270-300ft/lbs. All obviously depend on the remapper, the rolling road, the levels of smoke and individual requirements. 180bhp will put massive strains on your turbo and I wouldn't expect the smoke levels to be low.

0-60

0-60 will decrease, by upto a second, but 0-60 all depend on the driver. Also, unless you have a sintered clutch plate and SMF, all you'll do is trash your clutch sooner due to the amount of torque passing through it when dropping the clutch from standstill at WOT.

Clutches

What's your budget? The big names in uprated clutches for the TDI (personal opinion) are Sachs SRE, Helix Autosport and Southbend (American). There are others which included CG Motorsports. Various different sources suggest that the stock clutch is good for upto 300ft/lbs. So a good remap will keep you below the limit, but your clutch will wear slightly sooner. Uprated setups are around £750 delivered (not fitted), hunting around may knock off a couple of £10's but if all you're doing is going remap, then a fresh stock clutch will be fine.

Then there is the debate between Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) and Single Mass Flywheel (SMF). I'm currently running 230bhp and 410ft/lbs through the STOCK setup and have been for 6000 miles. So far, no slip or DMF rattle. Unless you plan on going hybrid/GTB or participating in traffic light drag races everyday, stick with DMF.

MPG

On my poor remap (increased fueling, no boost alterations) I saw a drop in MPG by 8 mpg from stock figures. With my second remap (hidden-power.co.uk) I never saw an increase/decrease over my stock mpg and it was a cleaner map. Motorway journeys will be the best time to run the TDI and mpg shouldn't be affected.

Exhaust

Full custom exhaust on stock or remapped setup isn't really necessary, a de-cat however, will improve turbo spooling. Some say that you need a full straight through setup but some people have ran (myself included) a GTB turbo kit with just de-cat and standard exhaust with no decrease in power. Personnel preference.

Intercooler + Pipes

How hard do you intend on driving the beast? Stock SMIC and pipework isn't the best, however, will hold a remapped PD130 boost as long as the pipework is in good condition. Heat soak could be an issue if you plan on WOT in the middle of summer on a race track. The odd burst here and there will be suffice for the standard SMIC, unless you plan on going hybrid/GTB that is, then a FMIC is a must.

Pricing starts at £500 for a full Airtec solution or £700 for a Forge setup. Forge turbo outlet or equivilent pipe is also recommended as the standard is a little restrictive.

Reference your current pipes, get some strong zip ties and get them secured ;)

Dual Maps

Some re-mappers offer a dual map service. One being a low boost or standard option and the other being high boost or remap. These can be changed with VCDS Lite - more info here - http://www.hidden-power.co.uk/

Extra

EGR delete is recommended. During a remap get them to flatten the EGR valve map to stop operation and block off the outlet on the manifold and inlet on the EGR. This way retains the anti-shudder valve (ASV) and a fail safe. Will improve low end responsiveness.

Tyres, more torque means more power to get to the road. Decent tyres are needed to keep the front in check in the wet.

Overall, a remap will bring new life to your car. The mid-gear range is fantastic and great for you especially with all the motorway mileage.

Ahhhh badger another amazing post :)
Thank you!! So much food for thought in this response!

Ok so currently the standard boost pipes are screwed in with self tappers as got fed up with then popping off haha!

May well stick with oem clutch them - I'll get prices tho and decide if in the long run it'll be better to get the uprated --- lol id get a cupra tdi but ppl say their mpg is a lot worse than the fr!

Cannot believe what power ur running just wow! Because of it being my daily I don't wanna go too mad with bigger turbos etc but at the same time also kinda jealous of ur power hehe!
The main reasons for doing this is (a) I want the car to be faster than my petrol I had before as I feel like I've had to take a step backward and (b) when I go out with the M3 I wanna at least be able to "keep up" a little bit better than I do, as well as my other mates with their petrols running 200-250hp I feel so sloooow grrr!

I like the egr delete option, I've recently replaced mine but only because I didn't realise there was an option to delete it without affecting the asv.

Tyres - no problem! With my driving style and car history I know all about good tyres and I never rock anything cheap :)

Give BVR Automotive a call, they're very good and knowledgeable if you're going to a stock clutch.

Mines a daily driver too. Still doing 500 miles a week at the moment and it surprises quite a few people when a clapped-out Ibiza pulls away from Focus STs and LCRs and also keeps up with quite alot more ;)

Just checked them out, they do tuning too apparently, would they be able to help with remap as well or would u recommend somewhere else for that? (I'm looking at shark ATM after poor service from a revo franchise) plus being local if there are any probs I can get back to them easier :) actually love ur car lol, that's what I want mine to be like ;)

I've never used BVR personally for remapping but if it's anything like there service, then you'll be in safe hands. I know they were one of the first to DPF delete the BI-TDI Amarok successfully :)

Thanks, it's been a labour of interest and the amounts I've learnt over the past months is brilliant! Just a shame that the paint work isn't the best...

U start at 0mph at the bottom of the slip road??

I don't think so

0-60 won't really increase IMO, you'll end up with more wheel spin than anything

0-60 times are only for people who like racing away from traffic lights....

I think u got the wrong end of the stick, I purely meant about the act of acceleration down a slip road.
Id also like to point out that 0-60 is also for people who do track days and events. Don't assume everyone is a chav waiting for their next traffic light derby

0-60 will improve massively. No remapped (or stock) PD130 will be wheel spinning up to 60mph. Launching cleanly will be come more difficult but you will definitely see an improvement.

180hp is attainable with improved breathing and a fairly aggressive map. My old PD130 made 182hp and 342 lb/ft on R Tech's rollers, but it chewed through stock clutches every 12 months

Stock sidemount is shockingly poor and one of the best mods you can do is a front mount intercooler. Stay away from the uprated sidemount intercoolers - apart from being shiny they do very little in terms of improved cooling and in some cases (depending on fitment) can be worse than the standard cooler.

A generic remap will see you at a realistic 165-170hp
