The Leon Cupra 280 has smashed the Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record for a front-wheel drive car. With an astonishing time of 7 minutes and 58.4 seconds, it becomes the first FWD production model to dip below the eight-minute barrier.

The car used to set the amazing lap time was a production-specification Leon Cupra 280 DSG, equipped with an optional Performance Pack* that includes Brembo high-performance brakes, specially designed 19-inch alloy wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres

Formally announcing the record at the Spanish company's Geneva Motor Show press conference, SEAT S.A. President Jürgen Stackmann said: "Our ultimate expression of the successful Leon formula is the all new Leon Cupra. It is the fastest and the most powerful car we have ever built and yet is a comfortable family car. The Cupra is our new icon."

The average speed of Leon Cupra's record-breaking run was 96 mph, with a top speed of 150 mph on the Tiergarten section of the circuit. The circuit surface was dry, with an ambient temperature of 10ºC and a track temperature of 8ºC. There is no doubt that such an outstanding record time was achieved not only because of an exceptional car, but also thanks to a driver who was equal to the situation.

Sitting behind the wheel of the Leon Cupra 280 was the Spanish driver Jordi Gené, official SEAT driver between 2003 and 2010 during the European Touring Car Championships (ETCC) and World Touring Car Championships (WTCC), among other events. He was also a member of the Leon Cupra development team at the Nürburgring.

*The SEAT Leon Cupra Performance Pack is not yet available in the UK. An announcement will be made in due course

Surprised you are even considering or contemplating another Leon after the **** you had to go through with SEAT with the one you have.

i was speaking if i was buying one , i have no intention of buying another SEAT , if they gave one to me free of charge then i wouldnt say no lol

Im going with an Audi S1 more than likely just waiting for the engine code and specs to be released.

Good luck with the S1 :). Pretty sure it will be the same engine and turbo as the Golf GTi :thumbup:

Audi have said it's a new engine and when it hits the polo it will have 250 bhp straight out of the box , so thinking (hoping) it will have either an enchances turbo that's used in the gti , like when they bought out the ko3s in the 1.8 engines to whatever variant that equates to in the ihi turbo or a detuned version of the s3 , Cupra , golf r engine , which they did in the edition 30 and edition 35 variants when the golf gti at the same time had 220 bhp the edition models had 230 and a ko4.
At the moment the golf gti has 220 ps as standard , the S1 is claimed to be 231 ps as standard.
The golf having 258 lb/ft torque (on the performance pack version) compared to the S1 which has 272 lb/ft torque.
That's why I think it's a detuned Cupra engine , hoping lol

I'm sure it's been mentioned at the Geneva motor show today the S1 228BHP 300+ torque and engine code been posted too.

You pay a premium for desire ability , if you have a Cupra 280 with standard seats or optional buckets dealers will make sure you pay a premium for the car with the buckets.

I'm sure when the other colours are announced that they will also be more desirable hence have a premium attached on a used dealers forecourt.

What I said is true. To repeat: "None of the options coming will add financial value to the car come resale other than desirability. SEAT UK have been very careful in their spec of the UK car."

The options coming with the Cupra will not factor on the official residual market value. They may help in desirability and yes dealers may inflate the prices based on these when they sell them on, but the car's seller is unlikely to see any real financial benefit, which was my point. :)

I have searched everywhere for the engine code and read most Geneva press articles from today but can't find the engine code. Do you have a link ?

I would disagree withy the first comment

For me it would be the options won't make the money they cost back but would add some value

For example I would never have purchased my LCR had it not had the tech pack

Rob, even though I still think it would be daft not to put the 230 Gti in it, I think maybe in lieu of an engine code the co2 rating may be on your side. At 162, the same as the s3 I think it too inefficient to be my piddly turbo, you might be in luck.

Thanks for the post , I went to see my local audi dealer 3 weeks ago and my name is second on the order book opening list lol , info about new cars normally appear on forums because enthusiasts take notice just like you have :)
I asked my audi dealer for the engine code but was told too soon before the launch not enough info available :(

It wouldn't put me off buying one if it was the golf engine but I would like to know what I'm paying for :)

Stage 1 straight from 230 to 350 would be immense lol 120 bhp increase for £500 would be the deal of the century, my even make this my next car if it's true!

Just been reading Pistonheads about the laptop and the forum members opinions there. Its laughable really and cant help but think about brand snobbery.

I summerise the new Leon in this way

1) Well built car with premium products [engine, interior etc]
2) Good value for money for equivalent spec
3) Brilliant hot hatch [quick and very practical]
4) Not common place
5) Fastest hot hatch around currently

What more is there to moan about?
