Tdi 130 FR problems :(

Hello,

Early 2008 MK4 Ibiza FR TDI 130. 69,000 miles.

A few things on my car have been worrying me and I wondered if anyone could give me some advice.

The first thing is the turbo. It's mostly when cold such as in the mornings. But when I accelerate, at around 2000rpm there's a very high pitched noise. Although it is not very loud I notice it, and it seems to be more frequent over the last couple of months. It's very high pitched like metal on metal, not like the siren noise people complain about when a turbo on a diesel blows.

When in netural, there is a grinding noise, then when I put down the clutch this goes away. There is also a screaching when I pull away sometimes when cold. I thought this was the clutch release baring, but have been told that the flywheel is making the noise and that the noise when pulling away is engine mounts. Does that sound correct? I was recommended using a conversion kit for the dual mass flywheel to save costs, does anyone know much about these?

A bit P'd off as I thought these were higher mileage problems! I always make sure the car is warmed up (at 90C) before I put any real power and revs through the engine. Although when I first got it I was a newby so kept booting it at 2,000 rpm which can't be good!

Thanks for any help, much appreciated!

My turbo does this in the cold under light throttle second gear, usually by the end of my road it disappears (warming up) only started doing it dice decat. Probably spooling up fast lubricated with cold.oil? Mines done this for 6 months hasn't got worse. When I was 6000 feet in Switzerland the noise was noticeably louder tho due to thin air

Thats the noises my BLT engined FR tdi made ( same as yours) when the turbo shat itself. Mine had been getting worse for around 5k then shaft broke as most KKK turbos do.

What happened when yours went? A lot of damage?

Also is there anyway to fix this before it goes bang, or will I need a new turbo?

Cheers for the advice, will take a look tomorrow before work!

I just had a look at it again, the noise seems to be a continuous high pitched noise but only under acceleration, as soon as i take it off it goes away. But at the same time, I can hear the turbo spool up which made me think it could be something else?

Although when I revved it, when it got to near 3K the high pitched noise occurred again, however a bit louder this time. I then revved it to see if any white smoke or anything was coming out of the exhaust but it was hard to see as it was quite dark. But when I did, I tried to only rev it to 4K, but it went all the way up to 5.5K which seems weird as I thought it red lined at 4.5.

I'm going to take it to a mechanic in the next couple of weeks but just very worried about the turbo. What are some other signs? The car kept stuttering too but I guess this can be normal when it's cold.

Personally first thing I would do is replace the aux belt, that can make noises that your describing, especially in the cold as the runner is harder and less pliable. Only costs £10ish and it's probably due anyway so worth a shot.

Not saying that will be the root of all your issues but at least there isn't a chance of you over hearing belt noise and missing the actual problem

I would always rather spend £30 ruling out cheaper fixes first!

Good luck!

feel around the inlet/exhaust manifolds for soot/oil. Mine made a funny noise like that and it was a blown exhaust manifold gasket

Thanks very much for the info, I'll have these looked at and changed! I'm starting to think less towards turbo as it's quite quiet, especially compared to the videos you see on youtube which are a very loud siren noise. Perhaps it is this, it just concerns me how the higher I rev, more especially round the 3k RPM mark, the high pitched whistle comes back, or is this expected with the aux belt?

Another thought could be the timing belt tensioner although these tend to rattle on idle.

Yeah, had a new timing belt 10k miles ago, so would of thought all of that would be okay. It's a tough one! May have to spend a lot of money in the short term, but I guess in the long run I should (touch wood)have a solid car. Couldn't think of a better one to be honest!

Ye if the aux belt is making the noise, then it will make noise at different revs randomly most of the time.

Ah okay, maybe this is it, there's a constant high pitched whistle when I have any pressure on the accelerator now, then as soon as i take it off it goes.
