Central Locking Dead After New Stereo Fitted - CURED!

Yo.

This is my first post so bare with me, I bought a Seat Leon 1.9 TDI SE couple of weeks back and am eagerly reading up on hints and tips on making the most out of the car! This forum is such a goldmine of info!

Anyways...
I bought a new stereo from halfords a week back and had it fitted by them, it was an Alpine CDE-9850Ri iPod Ready unit [awesome unit btw]. Straight after they fitted the stereo I couldnt lock the car up using the key fob, I could lock the car by manually inserting the key but even with this method the Alarm was not arming.

The key fob didnt even blink when I pressed the buttons to lock or unlock, so i asumed it was the key fob battery...I replaced the battery but STILL! no joy.

Took it to a Seat dealer yesterday and this really stumped them, they managed to get the key fob to start blinking again but the central locking would still not arm. They tried a new key fob with the car but also no joy. After 2hrs! of fiddling with my new pride and joy they were stumped, they couldnt even arm the alarm. They were getting an error code saying there was an error with the alarm. They asumed it may have been the ignition unit because when I extracted the key from the ignition the stereo would stay on and also the car thought the key was still in!

I then mentioned to them I had a new stereo fitted...they hadnt come across a problem with new fitted stereos causing problems with central locking...but off I went back to Halfords. That evening the Halfords chap [very helpful may I add!] took the stereo out and found that the car had a hands free unit behind the stereo. To be honest they should have picked up on this in the first place but it was really jammed deep down behind the stereo slot I couldnt blame them.

He took all the loom out and instantly noticed that there was a connecter block which shouldnt have been there, it was running from the handsfree to the connectors for the new stereo. I am not a tech wiz but in lamens terms he told me that the extra bit of loom with the connectors didnt need to be there, it was an orange wire [only used for Japanese cars apparently] which was causing the problem as it wasnt connected to anything and was causing it to be earthed [ I think that was right :p ] he completly removed that section of loom and hey presto! my key fob was working again.

They had never ever come across this before and neither had Seat. I was getting worried that my new car would need a new ignition and all sorts! and all it was was a silly little orange wire!

Hope this helps someone out there who has this problem, I thought it was worth a post at least!

Sorry for the essay!

Cheers peeps!
And keep up the awesome advice.

PS: Any advice on where to get a set of genuine car mats while im at it? Ebay doesnt seem to be coming up with much other than some custom made mats that are not Seat! Ideas?

The reason your stereo doesnt turn off with the ignition is the red and yellow wire has been joined together. Check that first for your stereo. If you need to get power from somewhere else for it take the lower drivers side dash of then there is a block that will give you everything you need live and switched live. You need yellow to be live all the time and you need the red wire to be live when ignition is turned on :)
