Advice Wanted - Kwik Fit Related - Oil Leak Following Service..

Good afternoon everybody,

My GF has a FR TDI and she took it in for a routine oil change at Kwik Fit.

Since having the oil change done, it has developed an oil leak that most definitely wasn't there prior.

We took it back and they advised that it was a dodgy seal on the oil filter housing which they have now replaced free of charge and the oil leak should be no more.

Back on the drive and it's worse than before. Back in it goes and they say they don't know what it is and that we're going to have to bring it back in the following weekend for them to look at it.

So this morning the missus dropped it off and she's just had a call to say that there is a crack where one of the oil sensors plugs in (like a lamda sensor he said) and that he thinks when a sensor has been removed and plugged back in it's been over tightened and it needs a new housing. They've quoted £243.99 inc labour to replace it.

I came off the phone to the missus and rang them myself to find out more info and asked why it had all of a sudden developed this leak when it was not leaking before and if one of his mechanics may have done this and he said no because all they do is replace the filter.

Now I'm a bit stuck on what to do to be honest, does anyone have any advice?

If it isn't a difficult job I'd have a crack at doing it myself, do you think this has been caused by Kwik Fit?

The problem is that they wouldnt have to touch the sensors when doing an oil change so if it is cracked there I cant see them sorting it free of charge.
I would have a good look at the oil filter housing and see where the crack is incase its near the top which would indicate over tightening which is there fault.
If they wont sort it I would replace it myself its easily accessible.

Best advice, steer clear of Kwik Fit or any other chain of rip off merchants.

Thanks guys,

I rang SEAT and the parts, including gasket and seal were £104.

However, I found a second hand part for a VW Polo (which I think is compatible with the Ibiza) for £25.

I'm pretty good at working on cars the only problem I find these days is getting decent access. Thankfully my neighbour has a ramp that I may use so I'll get it on there this weekend and investigate properly instead of just peering into the engine bay.

There may be many reasons why SHE went to QuickFit, but I guess she has now learned better?

It was just for an oil change. I don't have a ramp and I was short on time etc. Also I would have to drive to the tip to discard the oil and also my missus insisted on going to a garage.

Well being a mechanic my self I have to stand up for the side of mechanics.

Yes there is some dodgy ones out there And there are some good ones but forums like this will always just complain about the bad expletives they get not the good ones.

From what I read my self if say it could of been possibly casued by the mechanic working on the car but the new oil in there car could also be the reason it's just apperd after it has been changed.

What annoys me with mechanics I have delt with (your selfs not being on of them) is the fact of accident and errors do happen I know this becasue I do the job my self and I do make errors just like all other mechanics do (no one is perfect) but dealers and garges won't and don't like to admit fault so there for try to screw u out of more money so they don't lose any.

This is where I find te bad reps come from.

My car gets maintained by a reputable vw specialist in the mids a service and a vw stamp in my book costs what £80 + vat...... I don't want to pick on kwik fit or ats or so on but do they charge cheaper than that because I really don't see why you wouldn't want a vw specialist stamp in the book and someone who works on these cars all day long.....

The audi I had before my cupra was serviced and mot'd at kwik fit strangely only covered 1000 miles and 5 weeks before i brought it but all 4 tyres was bald when I say bald I mean bald with the back 2 that bad it sounded like the wheel bearing was going to fly off, as a mechanic myself I got underneath to find the inside edge was just cords with the tyre massively out of shape, I took advantage of knocking over £1000 of the asking price to replace non excitant rear pads, the possible wheel bearings that was just tyres in the end,I was happy but crapping myself to even drive it 2 miles to have the new tyres fitted it was that bad, the paperwork was all printed and signed by the mechanic at kwik fit....
I can only think it never even attended kwik fit just some random invoice has been made by a possible worker who also happened to be a friend of the person who owned the car....I can only go of the info in writing I had in front of me but there's no chance it would ever of passed a mot in a million years with the tyres that was on the car, I was ashamed to even take it to my local tyre place to get them swopped....

KwikFit isn't a "garage" in the normal sense, its name should make that fairly obvious.

Many years ago, a handful of my customers fell into their web, attracted by cheap offers that turned out to be very costly.

I ended up reporting them to the [now defunct] Hornsey Journal and the story ended up making national news in the Mirror IIRC.

One customer had taken his VW Scirocco to them for goodness knows what, he ended up with a whole list of items they claimed needed replacing, including front shocks and brake discs.
We had serviced and put his car through MOT a couple of weeks earlier.
Luckily, he came back to us to complain, so I raised his car on the lift and showed him everything he was worried about.

this is a pic of the apparent offender. The man at Kwik Fit said the sensors that screw into it may have been over tightened ans cracked the casing, but it's metal so I don't see how?

I'm going to clean it all up with WD and then check again to see if I can pin point where it's coming from.

Ross, the pic is of the oil filter housing, so I suggest you ask the man at KF why he thinks the "sensors" may have been over tightened.

Has he actually had a look yet?

Before you clean it up, check for fresh tool marks on anything in that area.

More to the point since you haven't touched the car and they say it has been overtightened then any logical offender in this case is the spanner monkey from quick fit who worked on the car since it was in perfect running condition before.

Look for tool marks as earthling said as they might have tightened it up during the service (you never know)

Btw mr quick fit you are never ever ever touching my Leon Supercopa EVER!

PS On a more useful note maybe take it to a proper garage and get a second opinion im sure some people on here would give you some good advice on good garages in your area.
