HI guys

I have a 06 1.9 tdi reference with 80K on the clock

What are the common faults with these cars as they get a few miles on the clock. Is there anything that should of already been done i.e recalls etc.

Hi, Mines on 157,000 miles (55 plate 1.9tdi), I'd say bulbs going in the rear light cluster and a few recent elctrical gremlins have been the main problems (owned car for 3 or 4 years since 121,000 miles). Recently the alternator pulley sheared off, replacement was quite expensive at GSF or Eurocarparts so sourced a 2008 model from a breakers on ebay and is working fine. As you can find on here noisy Dual Mass Flywheel which is best replaced at same time as clutch meaning potentially a £500.00 or £600.00 job if not already done under warranty. Ours I think is not done but seems to soldier on without problem. Every now and again get a knocking which I'm sure is from Clutch /Flywheel, then it solves itself and you dont hear it for a while. You can expect good economy if driven sensibly mine is always close to the official figures. A nice handling car for a non sport version with nice steering, but beware as the assistance is electric, if alternator fails it draws big time on the battery and steering becomes the work of the world strongest man. My advice is if ever in a leon or Altea and the battery light comes on park it and see if alternator belt is ok - if not you'll get sudden onset of extremely heay steering, good for your bingo wings but not for your familys safety! Overall its been a very reliable car given the mileage on it, just starting to develop a few gremlins though.

54 plate 1.9TDi 78K 4 years owned

Squeaky front windows in the summer
Slight rattle off DMF but not worth replacing yet
Long cranking time when hot
Spark erosion of tail light bulb soldered tip
LHR Wheel bearing replaced
Rear door handle switch worn = doesn't open. Fixed with Araldite
Rear door latch wear = opens but doesn't latch shut. New latch required

Thats all. Not that bad really for the family town runabout.

New EGR Valve- DIY job, and part not too expensive.
New Throttle body- also a DIY job, but part about £240.
Front Passenger window regulator/calble is knackered- not yet tackled and probably a garage jobby as I'm no good with electrics.
New clutch needed but that's probably my fault for having it remapped to 194bhp
Water tends to get into the centre caps on the alloys. Pretty expensive to replace considering it's a piece of plastic, but it looks pretty rubbish once the water gets inside so it's worth doing.

On the whole, not bad costs really.....and most of the jobs can be done yourself.

...oh and rear bulbs always blowing. Common fault apparently. Investment in shares of altea rear tail light bulbs would be wise.

I could add a few more things that have gone wrong on my 2.0tdi sport that may affect yours too?
ABS sensor failure (ker-ching) common VAG issue on earlier cars
Alternator clutch pulley squeal
Passenger window regulator failure
Water leaking into footwell via bulkhead
Uneven rear tyre wear causing vibration around 70-80 - requires 4 wheel alignment common on GolfV floorpan
plus usual rear bulbs blowing and MAF sensors failing
Not had injector or turbo problems yet though - touch wood..

Its been a rather troublesome vehicle compared to my other car, an 11 yr old clio diesel (!)

Hope you don't have any trouble with yours

Bit of an old thread resurrection, but this list looks very similar to things I've had done to mine, even down to the LHR wheel bearing!

Did you rectify the long cranking time when hot? Mines doing this too and it's annoying! I have read it could be the starter motor and some hot start sensor could be at fault...

my car was my sisters before me. she had to replace the drivers window regulator and cables. all of a sudden the central locking stopped working and the alarm would go off on its own, also the windows opened on thier own during the night. not sure what caused it, probably due to the fact that when the drivers window failed she had the glass proped up with cable ties then tried to use the remote fob to close the passenger window one day. it went boobs up from there.

had it all fixed in the end, new key fob was needed at a very cheap £60 for the plip half from the main dealer which i thought was cheap compared to a £400 ford focus one i had to buy once.

Since i have owned it, i had a timing belt done. and just yesterday had the dual mass flywheel and clutch done, i had a valeo solid conversion and its great so far. i plan on keeping the car until it dies because i love it so much.

the only other problem as said is ive had a couple of front headlight bulbs and a few brake bulbs. not too troublesome in summer, usually in winter itll have 1 go.

needs the tracking doing which i beleive is a common problem on these.

other than that its been great, good mpg. pulls like a train
