hi all,

this maybe a stupid question but how do i get the surround of the gear stick out for painting?? I seem to be using quite a bit of force trying to pull it out and i dont wanna break anything :/ and just another quick one the section of trim just above the head unit i want to spray as well how does that come out?? i assume i need to remove the head unit to get that bit out

cheers

The surround around the leather gaiter on the stick you mean? If you feel down the sides of the leather you should find two little lumps about 1/3 of the way forward of the rear edge of the gaiter. These are little plastic tabs, push them in towards one another and the gaiter and the surround lift up away from the center console. I'm not sure you can easily separate the two apart, or how to get the gaiter off, the gear knob probably has to come off but there's probably some screws below it.

The trim around the head unit does come off once you get the head unit out. That whole section from below the vents to above the ashtray (plus the horizontal bits between the climate control and the HU and the HU and the drink holder, demister control etc) is one part. If I remember right, get the headunit out then the rest unclips from there.

You also need to remove the ash tray which is held in with a single screw in the top of the ash tray, once you have removed the ash tray there are a further couple of screws at the back behind the ash tray. If you want to remove the gear knob, after removing the gaiter surround pull it over the gear knob you should now see the base of the knob which is held on with a metal clip, the same type as you find in the engine bay holding pips on, remove this and your knob with pull of.

cheers guys, i gave pulling those tabs together but they didnt seem to budge, these were the ones that like face in towards the back seats. If you pull them hard enough will the gaiter just like pop up?

They sort of face each other, one on either side of the rim around the gaiter, behind the gearstick. If you pull them in towards one another with one hand you should be able to lift the rim of the gaiter upwards off the console.
