BMW need to sort this out, its a disgrace

Loads of high end Beemers have been stolen in the Midlands recently, including a 1M very close to me.

My brother has a 335i. Someone smashed the driver window two weeks ago, presumably to get in the car and bypass the alarm and take it.

Luckily my mum heard something and switched the lights on at home, so the to55ers got spooked and went.

He has hidden the OBD port and fitted a secret cut off switch, hopefully that will help, but he should never be in this situation anyway.

I am so confused as to what to do car wise. Even though it is still quite soon after the event my heart wants another 335d as I loved it but my brain is saying no.

Are most of them taken to eastern Europe? Or chopped in the UK?
Either way I would advice you to try and keep calm, at least for a week or two. But then again, this sounds to be a pro job, and chances you see it again is rather slim I'd guess.. :-(

I read yesterday that Manchester city adebayor had is new x6 stolen, again he had both the keys the police and BMW are looking into the possibility that someone has a special tool (only BMW technicians should have) to start the cars

I'm thankful that there had been a high profile case of this, now it's in the news BMW may wish to sort it. Relocating the OBD port is one thing but should you have to? NO! Bunch of w@nkers!

Maz, don't be put off but have you considered installing a pole to your driveway and parking the car about that?

This is one of the reasons why I haven't gone mad with the motors i.e. of the non shopping trolley stock you and I have talked about. Problem is the bikes are in the garage and I cannot physically build another garage due to the extension. Even with three cars on the drive plus the fourth on the road, I know it would be nicked if it sat on the drive with two cars in front of it.

Sad state of affairs but that's reality I'm afraid. Give yourself a bit of time and then go around having a look at some possible alternatives. By the time you've got your cheque your mind will have already been made up.

Really feel for you mate.. A friend on a forum has this happen to him 2 weeks ago, all being stolen to order then either broken up or shipped out on new plates..

I wouldnt give up hope.. Facebook and forums have amazing power of getting stolen things back, Not sure id want my stolen car back though but at least you would be out of pocket as much.

I am sure time will clear my mind up. As I previously said its hassle taking the car in and out of garage regardless of how nice and secure it is in there. Fine if it was a weekend car i.e. a Porsche but its not.

Yes you shouldn't have to relocate the OBD port. Yes you shouldn't have to install a secret cut off switch. Yes you shouldn't have to install a drop post into your driveway. But if it means you car doesn't get stolen, then surely it's worth it?

My ally is gated. If I came back home late it is a lot of hassle taking the car in and out. The ally is not narrow but certainly isn't wide either so thats another problem.

I totally understand where you are coming from but i would hardly drive the car knowing I would waste 30 minutes taking the car in and out every single time.

That wouldnt bother me with a weekend car...

No smashed glass though on this one fella, all down to a laptop and some clever software it seems, no other tools needed.....except for the ones operating the laptop and driving the car away obviously.

Yeah totally agree, easy to say it after the fact and annoying you should have to go to such lengths to protect the things you work hard for, but magpies like shiny objects and when nobody is looking they just take them unless there are serious obstacles in the way.

Insurance companies are rotten for trying to get out of paying out from what I have heard so deffo give them a hard time.

Its all about who you know. I know I can get keys precoded and cut for any VAG group car, but, its then the responsibilty of the person to use their priviledges sensibly. I know i would never have the bollocks to nick anything.

You can't get keys pre coded, they have to be matched to the cars immobilizer which uses rolling codes.....

I've heard a lot about these beemers getting nicked makes you wonder where there all going.

Never seen an Audi stolen without the keys either

This is becoming really common. Seems the scumbags use clever software to bypass the security system and ecu. Only bmws being targeted.

We had 3 brand new Transits at work, 2 weeks later 2 were nicked from out side, both with <2000 miles on the clock, some reason they left the one that had a dent in either side of it... can only assume they used the same kind of software because the keys were still there and no glass on the floor, they were also caught on ANPR going through the Dartford tunnel but it didn't take any photos because they weren't reported as stolen at the time

Gutted to hear the bad news mate. There is nothing you could do to prevent this happening - if they want it, the thieving b'stards will get it one way or another. My mates TT went after they broke into his house whilst he was asleep for the keys. He lost the car, had to convince the insurance that the keys were kept safe and more than 6 feet away from the doors and windows of the house, and had his home "violated" and made to feel unsafe. Take some comfort (no matter how little) from the fact that they took the car without any form of threat to you or the Mrs and without breaking into your home.

Yes there are positives to take from this. Ultimately a lot of heart ache that the car is gone as I really want another ones but my brain is telling me not to. I got things like insurance going forward to consider as surely BMWs will go through the roof.
