TSI and high octane fuel.

Just wondering how much difference people think it makes when running a high tech engine like the 1.2 (and 1.4) TSI on higher 98-100 RON fuel??

I have noticed a slight difference already in fuel economy when running my 1.2 TSI with 98 or 99 RON fuel compared to 95 RON. But not sure if it's just placebo effect... !

On my old 1.4 75ps it didn't appear to make much difference at all. I ran it on the higher octane every now and then for the supposed cleaning effects.

Over to you?

Turbo cars benefit from higher octane alot more than NA cars.

Higher octane fuels isn't just about added power/economy.

The 1.4TSI is mapped for 98 RON fuel, it can be used with 95 RON but has "slight power loss" leading me to believe the car is meant to be run on super unleaded to get the best performance out of the engine.

I thought it it might make a bigger difference due to the technology involved. I'm sure the 1.2 also isn't as happy on 95 RON as on the higher stuff. I was stuck with the 95 last time I filled up.

I'll try it on Vpower next time. ;-)

I notice a slight difference in MPG for the better when I fill up with the Tesco 99 fuel (I forget what it's called), but don't do it very often as the nearest Tesco is about 10 miles away!

I at least feel like I notice a difference in 95 vs 98 in the Leon - have run my Cupra on super from new!

I used to run my Cupra on sainsburys super unleaded but now run it on tesco momentum 99 and runs well on it with improved mpg. I used to get about 250 miles per tank (with a bit of inspired driving) but now I get about 320 (also with some inspired driving)

I put in the normal stuff, sure you get better mpg with 99 ron but 95 is cheaper to buy and honestly haven't noticed any major performance differences

98 all the way, although i have been known to run on 100 a fair few times

If you were doing 15K per year as I do then the price per litre is very important. I ran my two 300bhp STi on 95 and never found a difference going to higher octane, the ECU simply adapted. Both did in the region of 50K before being sold with no engine problems at all (actually, no problems of any description).

Shell have been forced to drop their increased mileage claims by the ASA as they can not be substantiated. But, the placebo effect will still convince people that it is better. Unless you have a time machine to re-run the car in absolutely identical conditions and driven exactly the same way, there is no way you can make a true comparison.

I put Total 97Ron in mine and it whoops the 95Ron i used to put in from Texaco (and the 99Ron i used to put in from Tesco).

Easily 3-4MPG better along with better throttle response I average 45MPG now, even found Total 97 better than V-Power.... Just Saying....

Interesting that people think different brands give different results.

I generally go to either Tesco, BP or Shell. Occasionally Total and Jet.

With this car I've so far only put Tesco momentum, BP ultimate and Shell normal in.

run the engines on a test bed with identical tests then find shell v power outperforms

I don't think anyone is arguing that the higher octain fuels have benifits BUT the question is does the extra cost really make it better in the real world. Maybe you get a couple of better mpg, maybe you don't but does the extra cost of the fuel at the pump actually give you any savings or is it all cleaver marketing?

My money is on the normal stuff, I will live with maybe the engine being 1 or 2 bhp down, in the real world this makes no differance at all.

I want the best performance from my engine so I just the best fuel.

V power also has a lot of cleaning properties that keeps you engine running sweet.

Does anyone know where I can buy a higher octane fuel than the stuff from petrol stations? Like 102 or summat?

ignorance is bliss i guess.

I have seen the tests and viewed the results and VPower leaves the engine cleaner and in better mechanical condition, when it is set to run on performance fuel.

If a car is not set to run on in then there is no problem. but with the bocas i bet you get a fair bit of carbon build up on the spark plugs with 95 more than 98
