SouthBend stage 2 Clutch fitted.

Righto lads.

After a few weeks of my clutch slipping more and more and endless hours searching on the internet trying to find first hand feedback of clutchs and i must say at least 50% of what i read was BS second hand information they people seem to just reguritate from other sites, luckily the other 50% was genuine information of what peopple had expierenced first hand, both good and bad.

I was after a clutch with stock feel and able to hold a lot more torque, recent logs on my car suggest i was hitting 350lb/ft + torque spikes when coming on full boost, so i want a clutch well able to handle this and more.

Que the SouthBend Stage 2 OFE Endurance clutch rated to 450lb/ft for use with the stock DMF.I went for this clutch as i dont want the possible chatter features of a SMF and want stock pedal feel, smooth engagement and longevity.

This clutch uses OFE (Organic/Feramic Element) with a sachs unsprung clutch disc.The organic side is brass weaved to let it take alot more heat and the other side is graphite and ceramic(feramic) compound, this makes the clutch more grabby but because of the graphite will not be so hard on you flywheel.

I also got this with a 2400lb clamp load pressure plate which will allows for up to 450lb/ft in conjunection with a LUK DMF.

I was fitted today, i have no clue how i'm going to stay off boost for 500miles while this beds in, once it does i'll give my feedback on how it performance/feels real world, for now i am waiting for the pedal to stiffen up and get settled in, i know i am going to end up driving around aimlessly just to bed this in over the next few days, LOL.

Need to book some dyno time now......;)

Nice one mate, looking forward to your opinion on this set up once it beds in. It's like you say many you give feedback on something is purely based on third party opinions which I don't see the point in

I couldn't see anywhere the rating for this clutch, one of the reasons i stayed away from Sashs was because of the poor customer service i heard about and the price, the kit i wanted was this:

Very nice rob, how much did the clutch kit cost.

The Southbend kits was $699 delivered, that included the clutch disc, Slave cylinder and presurre plate, they also will only declare $400 on the packing slip for customers.
I ended up paying about €60 duty.

The DMF was £280 from ECP.

So in sterling:

£436 for the Clutch kit, disc, pressure plate and LUK slave cylinder
£280 LUK DMF
£50 import duty.
£270 to get it fitted.
=
£1036.

Thats not bad IMO for a clutch rated to 450lb/ft from a top brand like Southbend DXD.

Thanks, its starting to settle in nicely already but has a bit to go, starting to get more of a feel from the clutch pedal, another 300miles to go before it gets the lead foot treatment:D

Great clutch setup mate! Not a bad price all in tbh either..

My favourite LCR on here continues to go from strength to strength!!! :D

Cheers t0m, its not a bad price as you say when put in perspective of how much other parts have cost me.

The clutch is bedding in nicely, its sooooo hard to stay of full boost, i've never had MPG this good and i didn't even have to fill up on meth this week :lol:

The clutch pedal continues to get better, the clutch engagement thus far is very smooth.

Another 100miles of driving like a granny and then she's get some lauch control treatment.

Still respect to the OEM setup its taken above and beyond what it was designed to do.

Robbie, I didn't have any clutch pedal feel issues with my new clutch.
Do you know if the guys bled the line?
Might be worth trying it again.

Really, it did take a while for mine to stiffen up, 2ltrs of fluid were ran through it to bleed all the air out, can really do more than that, i did hear these slave cyclinders are sometimes tricky to bleed out.

The pedal is a lot better now, its alot lighter that previous but my previous clutch setup was totally shot as you can see in the picture.

Engagement now is VERY smooth, i have put up 11hrs of mixed driving on the clutch so i gave it a bit of stick today and all was good, i have a feeling i am going to go through a lot of tyres.

What we did was have a hose into a bottle. Push the clutch pedal in and open the nipple to allow it to bleed the fluid into the bottle rasther than back into the system.
Once you've done that a few times try rebleeding the line from the pedal to the nipple.
Not too sure if this will make any difference but if you end up not happy with the pedal feel it might be worth a shot.
Your flywheel has taken a beating for sure, blue = severe abuse. Hat off to you for driving your car like it should be instead of ***** footing about like a trailor queen.

350BHP would be amazing to see, how's your surging issue?

Yeah i drive the car on abit alright, buts its well maintained as you know, it will never be a trailer queen, its to enjoyable, i can't see why you can't have a show worthy car and drive it like it was meant to.I'll be gearing up for track days soon!

I am still having the problem with the clutch, i'm gonna bleed it some more tomorrow and see.I was driving today and while sitting in traffic with the clutch depressed and in 1st gear the car jumped forward as the clutch must have engaged a small bit.

I also noticed the clutch pedal was slighty notchy sometimes.

Did you just use the old school method of bleeding?

I'm booked in for my first track day this saturday, can't wait but to be totally honest i am a slighty nervous/excited not sure which one.

Any advise?, i have had no previous expierence.

Only real advice is the usual, take it easy at first and gradually build it up as you build confidence. The car is set up perfectly for the track so don't worry too much ;)

BTW you have your 18" alloys? Would say to put those on as the car will handle better. Mind you going around on the 19" alloys would make for some super pics!!!

Yeah the 19" would look cool alright, i am putting on my 18" with a set of Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta, they should be good.

The car should be setup well, plenty of handling mods etc... i will however be turning down the boost a bit, say 20psi and i need to get a set of pads sorted, i have a set of Ferrodo 2500s in the garage with 60% left on them, i might through them on untill such time i can overhaul the whole brake setup.

The track is Mondello park in Ireland.

Ahh Mondello! Tight and twisty from what I remember seeing the touring cars visit there when they did on tv..

Enjoy mate! Be good if someone can get some pics of your car on track! :)

May aswell rinse those ds2500's just for Mondello tbh.. Then overhaul like you say.....

Rob, dont forget to do a few cool down laps before you come off at each session. Once back in the paddock, find a flat place to park so you can leave the hand brake off so as not to boil the brake fluid..

I was at Oulton Park begining of last year in the Ibiza (AP 4 pots with DS2500's) and nearly set the brakes on fire. Just finished 8/9 VERY hot laps, approaching the last bend when the red flag come out (some pleb had fell off the track!!) and had to come straight into the pits. As soon as I was stationary I had smoke comming in throu the air vents, had to drive round the paddock for 5 mins to cool them down :lol:
