Homage to a 2004 Ibiza 1.4SX...

... As it's looking likely that I'm going to be saying goodbye to my bright blue Ibiza in the next couple of months (or even weeks perhaps). I thought I'd write a little homage to my fairly normal little car. This is a bit of a story so grab a tea and biccies and put your feet up. It's not exciting but just go with the prose...

When I say normal I just mean it's not a particularly special Ibiza... just a 1.4 75ps of little poke but plenty of solid reliability, a nice looking small hatch, but a bit of a sheep in wolf's clothing, albeit a dependable sheep (if that doesn't sound too dodgy...).

Looking back at my posts I originally came on here asking about the Ibiza 1.4 TDi in March 2006... but I ended up with the 1.4 petrol a few days after I posted about the TDi. In many ways I wish I had gone with the TDi, it might have been more torquey - meaning those horrible moments when my ibiza slugged slowly away from junctions might have been less excrutiating and the fuel consumption might have been much more acceptable for my wallet due to not needing to kick the guts out of it with my right foot to get the revs to an acceptable level for taking off - but hindsight is a wonderful thing. And just perhaps... I might not have kept it so long. It might not have given me these years of relatively faultless service.... who knows :shrug:

I love my car despite it's faults. The Extreme blue paint may not have been my choice had I bought the car new, but being an SX that bought me a few toys. The climate control being my favourite of these. It works well. The ventilation is superb with a good flow of air coming into the car - to the point that I can smell when someone is smoking in a car two cars ahead of me and have to quickly put the ventilation on recirc to stop the stink coming in.....:blink:

It also got front fogs and the Alana CD radio which I quickly replaced with a JVC unit, and fairly nice 15" alloys. It didn't get the computer that tells you the fuel economy (thankfully or it'd be reminding me that it's not great all the time) or the steering wheel mounted controls... but hey, you can't have everything. And the unusual colour grew on me until I now love it. It looks great with a coat of good wax...

I even got used to the doors, with their single hinge stop, that either closed heavily on your leg or smashed into objects next to you if you weren't careful. I learned to juggle the things I was carrying to hold the door where I wanted it to get in and out without damage to me, the door or any car next to me.

I learned exactly where the sweetspot is in the revs so that you can pull away from junctions at a pace approaching fairly fast rather than having the worrying drop in engine note and speed if you get the revs wrong - which at first was accompanied by many cases of stalled engine.

I liked it's little eccentricities... though the lack of boot light always amazed me.

I liked it's comfort, the solid cocooning feeling that I felt when I first got into the ibiza that made my old 1998 fiesta feel like a flimsy tin can. The feeling that it was a proper car made of proper stuff, that looked pretty sexy and IMO still does even though it's in standard pre-facelift guise.

It didn't cause me much hassle. The rear washer pipe popped off, almost inevitably, the fog light/headlight switch was dodgy and there was a problem with a leak in the radiator. But those were fixed under warranty and nothing left me stranded. After the warranty all it's needed is a wishbone bush and a couple of bulbs, and less than 500 ml top up oil. It runs smoothly and quietly and doesn't make much fuss.

It's just.... I wish it had a bit more wolf there for a bit more economy... What I didn't realise when I bought it was that I probably picked one of the dullest engines in the line up and one which due to the need to over-rev it had quite poor economy for the performance. The 1.2 3-cylinder was more fun to drive when I had one as a courtesy car..... If I'd picked another variant I probably wouldn't be changing cars now as I'd happily drive it for another 2 years or more.... however I've got itchy feet now..

Tbh im glad there is someone on here that enjoys their normally aspirated Ibiza like i do, we don't all drive Cupras and FRs and its good to hear someone saying something good about the wee engined ones rather than 'should of brought a cupra'.

Hope the 1.2tsi goes well, i too am looking at these :)

I think its nice to look back on your car with honesty and say you have enjoyed the ride :D I had a 1.4 Polo SE for years and it was a good work horse but i do agree with you about getting the rpm right when pulling off, esp 4 up.

I ve always thought that even the 1.2 Ibiza is a good sporting shape (esp 2 door) and much better than most others out there, any one fancy a Micra. :cartman:

Ive owned a few cars over the years and its the ones which cost you an arm and leg just to keep on the road which you want to forget, however thankfully there are not too many Ibiza's around with that problem.

Good luck with the MK5. Come back to the MK4 page and let us know what you think. ;)

It's rare that good things are reported on, it's often doom and gloom (of varying levels) that we hear of.

It's always amazing just how attached you can become to metal, rubber and plastic. I'm sure your car would right a similair prose if it could!

Good luck with your Mk5, I hope the old girl goes to a good home :)

Thanks Guys, I decided to write this, which is an honest opinion of my car, because when I first came on here I was a little scared by the many reviews and reports of troubles and niggles with the mk4 ibiza... gear box problems, many trips to dealers etc. At the time I was aware that bad news gets reported which was why I came here to ask owners opinions.

I decided to write that little bit above to show the story of my happy ownership. As much as the 1.4 wasn't the best engine choice for poke/fun it was a great choice for reliability over my ownership.

I loved the beeza so much and I'm getting a new one, that shows that I'm happy with it more than anything.

I checked out my little niggles with my current car on the new ibiza and I'm happy to say that they've all be fixed (eg the doors...). No doubt there'll be other little niggles but overall I'm happy to stay SEAT and Ibiza...

Like a breath of fresh air to hear somebody say something positive about the ibiza! Yeah, they do have there niggles, but i suppose they are decent liitle cars. Good luck with the new car and don't forget to report back to us how is compares to the mk4!

The Mk4 is being traded... I took it to the dealer today and I'm trading it in for a new 1.2TSI sportrider in silver... can't wait!!

I will be sad to see the old girl go. Just hope the new one can keep my Seat loyalty going!

i love my little 1.4 and will drive it into the ground. to be honest one of the best cars ive had !! so far very little to report that has gone wrong and my 1st and probably last NEW car that ive owned...decided to have fun with her as the part ex now is soooo poor!!! nice to see someone else who has enjoyed theirs and is moving on....

Yes, have to say the part ex was shockingly low.. and it's used value private is too. If you're happy with it then it's good to keep it. I just feel the time is right to move on.

I'm not one to change cars every five mins so hopefully I'll be keeping the new one until I drive it into the ground - let's just hope that's in at least 10 years time!!

mines 6 now and done 25,000 miles lol. guess i will be keeping it a while unless a lotto win comes my way. I dont change cars often either, only really when needs must. hope you have fun in your new one and looking forward to seeing the pics !!!

Yes, mine has just gone over 60,000 so a few more than yours, it is approaching 7 now. It'd be fine for a while I'm sure, however my mileage has crept up a little in the last year or so since my OH got a van (part of the reason for the scrapes was reversing round the van and wall!).

Just took everything out of my car in preparation for taking it to be traded on Tuesday. took the stereo out and put it back to how it was when I got it.

Quite sad really!! But I'm sure once I see the new car that'll disappear!!

Been a good car she has...

I know how you feel, I was quite sad when I emptied mine - But like you said, that will disappear once you get your new car :D

Yeah its true once you get your new car the feelings for the old one will die ;)

I had a 1.4 Polo SE from new and washed it every couple of weeks. It was in top condition with no corrosion on the alloys etc. It got sold to a local guy and i saw it a couple of months later as dirty as hell and the wheels almost black with dust :-o

Lol you will look at this over the next couple of days and think... "do I really want to get rid of it?" and then thats when you can't decide :p

I'm in the same boat though loony, I had an affair with a mk5 cupra and can't help but get finance quotes :p hopefully next month ;)

I agree that the 75PS 1.4 is a reasonable engine for a runabout, I just wish that VAG had offered the 100PS(?) 1.6 16V from launch of the Polo 9N and Ibiza 6L - that would have given enough extra power to make moving about a bit easier and probably ended up giving better MPG, as its output is not HUGE it would not have encrouched into the higher output power units that existed pre GTI launch.

1.4 100hp engine is available in the 6l ibiza and equivalent polo. I had it in my old one. Felt much brisker than the 85hp version to me.

Well I'm glad you've had fun with the car and I'm even more glad that you're staying VAG!
The 1.2TSi does sound good and you sound as though you're going to thoroughly enjoy it.
This post was a good read but you're making me sad about my little 1.4 and how it's 50 miles away, sitting at home on the drive, all sad because I'm not cleaning it or taking it out.
Haha, keep us posted on the new car!

1.4 100hp engine is available in the 6l ibiza and equivalent polo. I had it in my old one. Felt much brisker than the 85hp version to me.

When I speced up the car for my wife, I was worried that the 100PS would be a pain to drive, ie no low down torque. After I got the car I discovered that my assumption that a 1.4 16V with only 75PS would have loads of low end torque to make up for the lower maximum power output was - WRONG! I also think that that time, May/June 2002, specing a Polo with the 100PS engine was getting to be a bit tricky if you wanted 5 door and lots of other user handy bits. VW did eventually offer the 1.6 16V engine very late in the face lifted versions life (too little too late not all of us wanted to buy a 1.8T in order to get a petrol engined car that was easy to live with). I seem to remember that that engine was only available on the Sport model and that limited build factory fit options offered.
