Hello

I have a 04 Cupra TDI

When should the fuel filter be changed?

Are there any MPG / performance advantages?

it like any filter, if it clogs performance is down. I changed mine on my 20vt and i dont think it had been done in 80k, it made a difference, more responsive and smoother! for a couple of quid you may aswell change it mate

Petrol filters dont get changed at the main dealer, it isnt a serviceable item that needs changing, i recommend diesel filters as per the service interval e.g 40k miles

Can anyone tell me whether the fuel filter on a Leon mk1 FR tdi is under the bonnet or near the fuel tank? I want to see if I can change it myself seeing as you guys all say its a 5 minute job! :)

its under the bonnet mate, behind the drivers side headlight

Any quick guide in which order to do this swap guys?

Does not really matter which pipes to remove when doing the Fuel filter, only one thing though make sure your new filter has the 2 seals supplied (blue and black)as you need to change them every time, if not you may get a leak, also the Pd is self bleeding so no need to fill the Filter up with fuel.

it will take you 10 mins to change and i have only ever done it once the other week on mine the one i removed was a Bosch with VW/audi stamped on it i am dam sure it was never changed and thats at 50k with a full seat service history:confused:

make sure you put the coloured seals on the right way..IIRC its the blue which goes on top so comes off last and on first

Nam quick question - is it the same process as the petrol version to change it? I.e. remove the fuse and run the engine till it stops before removing it all?

never had the petrol version of the leon mate, even then with all the fuel filters i have changed (Gt turbo,Clio 16v ect) i just clamped the fuel pipes.

it is easier with the Pd engine as all you do is remove the pipes hardly any Diesel comes out , swap the old filter with new refit pipes and then start the engine as the Pd150 is self bleeding, should take you 10 mins if the pipes are not hard to remove, one reason i want a pipe remover now:)

Ok I changed the filter yesterday, here's a few extra tips for those who haven't changed one before (like me!)

- Make sure you have a good big set of pliars to loosen and move the hose clamps off of the 2 single hoses attached to the filter. They can be very hard work to remove so a bit of WD40 sprayed around the end of each hose might help to loosen the hoses, especially if they've been on for a long time (like mine had) and are on very tight.

- There is a T-piece with a fuel pipe attached to each side of it, you'll need to remove this by taking a spring clip off first - BE CAREFUL WHEN REMOVING THIS SPRING CLIP! - we spent 20 minutes fishing the clip out from in the engine bay using a long drill bit with some blu-tak stuck to the end after my dad had been a little too hasty and pinged the clip off. Just be careful and take your time, saves a lot of swearing and headaches :)

- When loosening the clamp around the filter itself, you only need to undo the screw until you can no longer see the very end of the screw inside the bottom part of the bracket. Don't remove it completely! You should just be able to loosen the top part of the bracket (a V-type clamp) and with a little persuasion and maybe a bit of WD40 again to help lube around the filter, it should twist and pull out of the bracket.

- Installation is obviously the opposite of removal, all i'd say is, if you have some spare diesel in a jerry can or whatever that you can pour into the top of the filter before you replace all of the pipes then, it might make the bleeding process a little easier.
I didn't - I refitted all of the pipes and started the car which ran for about 10 seconds before cutting out, which led to me turning the car over for a good while to get fuel into the filter again to fill it up before it would start again.
Another thing you could try is to keep the revs up at around 2,000rpm when starting the car for the first time after fitting to try and help get the fuel pumped around the system faster and possibly avoid the engine dying.

As said in previous posts above though, its a relatively easy procedure for anyone willing to give it a go :)

Good guide especially the clip part lol ive got metal string holding mine in

Its horrible turning her over for like 5 minutes does this damage the starter motor? I suggest to anyone who lives near a self service petrol station full up a small bottle :) to save a lil worry (is this illegal?)
