Project Carbon Detail

Another detail that has been a very long time coming! The car itself is a great example to the LCR club as a lot of thought and attention has gone into it from the modifications to the engine bay bling. Looking around the car you can tell that no expense spared in its maintenance over the years and as Daz said to me a few times now, he cleans it twice on a weekend if it gets dirty on the Saturday!

The detail was very very last minute! It was decided on the Saturday morning that we would do it as BHP show was coming up. Couple of hours later….

11AM - I am presented with this:

Taking scope of the job at hand I chose the weapons and jobs we were both going to do for the day as time was against us. I wanted to try and do the best job possible so the car looked great for the BHP show and I was also very conscious that silver cars are so dam difficult to make gleam so I chose the Werkstat system to add some depth to the paint.

At this point the process was not over yet with the wheels. I had some Iron X ready to give the wheels more of a deep clean as I noticed some Iron and heavy brake dust deposits that wasn’t moving. I didn’t have much Iron X so had to be a bit liberal in its application. It did the job though and I got 1 litre of Wolfs Chemicals Brake Duster coming soon which I am pretty excited about.

Claying gave some big surprises. We had a lot of red paint overspray all over the body of the car. DK quickly ascertained it must have been when he had refurbished his callipers. Quite shocking as he literally covered everything so a lesson to all to be very careful!

There were some big tar spots that needed extra attention. ValetPrp Tar and Glue remover used to good effect.

CORRECTION STAGE

Car taped up.
IMG_1526.jpg

IMG_1528.jpg

I started off on the right rear quarter of the car so see what worked best. Pulled out the Rotary, Menz IP and elite car care heavy polishing pad. This combination worked (got good shine and correction level) however it was such hard work as the conditions were too hot. The polish was drying out quicker than I wanted and the panel was getting a little too hot for comfort. I decided to use the DA to reduce the heat on the panels and switch to 203S. This was a great combination and produced great results. I tried the rotary again but I just was not happy with the heat generated on such a hot day in the sun.

IMG_1533.jpg

Rotary lifted quite a bit of dirt from the paint
IMG_1534.jpg

Moved onto DA to keep heat down

The bonnet needed two hits to get rid of heavier swirls and RDS.
IMG_1549.jpg

IMG_1552.jpg

I had a tad problem midway through the correction stage! SHOCK HORROR!

IMG_1556.jpg

Only purchased this G220 four months ago and hardly used it as I have been using the rotary more and more. I tightened the screws up and normal operation resumed but a little concerned what damage this may have caused internally.

Whilst I was machine polishing DK got to work on all the door shuts. He spent a lot of time on shut and it really shows. He added Dodo Juice Need for Speed on his wish list already.

The whole car was corrected with the 1 stage polish and I was pretty pleased with 203S performance thus far. On some panels I mixed some 106FA to get them more depth and a refined finished.

I am a big fan of Werkstat products and thought it was a good idea to use these as Daz could then top up the protection at a later date as he has these also. Werkstat Prime Acrylic is a fantastic all in one polish and got great cleaning and protection agents in it. I applied this all over the car with a DA working it in at a low speed (2) and finishing off at a higher speed (4).

Big thanks to DK for providing the car for me to work on, hope you enjoyed the detail as much as I did!

Detailers Notes
- It is always good to detail a mate’s car because they like to help! Lol!
- Really need to watch the heat on the panels with a rotary especially when working in the elements.

Nice to see a car I know detailed. I'm astounded at the results from cleaning mostly. Find it hard to believe that DK would miss anything on his car! Makes an already good looking car even better.

Know who I'll be getting to do my car when I get a decent one.

Mighty good job!

edit: ignore the post thumb down thing. No idea why that came up :p
