Oil...What to use in your TDI

Hi,
I've got a 2010 Ibiza CR 1.6 Tdi - can anyone please let me know the viscosity of the oil required - I take it that it needs to be fully synthetic and is it the Quantum brand (PD Platinum 5w/40 or Synta 10w/40 or Longlife III 5w/30 seems to be the choice) that should be used or its there a better alternative? I don't fancy going to the 10,000 mile mark before an oil change on a new engine - despite that the dealer advises(!!)

You need an oil that meets the VW507.00 spec, all of which are 5w-30. The suitable oils that we have are via the link below.

Hi Guys, Just canvassing opinions on a couple of oils for a 2001 Seat Toledo, TDI non PD I believe as it's a 110.

I have just bought some Quantam Synta for an oil change but had been mulling over whether I should get Castrol Magnatec both are of course 10w 40w oils. Can anyone tell me which is the better oil irrespective of price or is it simply down to personal preference.

Both are pretty basic options, they're okay but nothing special. I'd try to get a 5w-40 instead, as it will give better cold start protection.

Motul X-Cess is a good oil for the money, probably works out cheaper than Magnatec as it's in a 5L container.

Thanks for the info oilman but isn't a fully synthetic oil too thin for a non PD engine like mines which has done over 110k in miles

ESP is a good choice for that, it's a top quality oil, but I would say to change it at 10k/annually.

Not at all, an oil is a grade, no matter what it's made of, so a 5w-40 is a 5w-40 whether it's synthetic, semi or mineral oil. A 5w-40 is thinner than a 10w-40 when cold, so will give better cold start protection, but when they are at normal operating temperature, they are the same viscosity.

Thanks for that Tim, That's cleared my understanding. I would definately want something that can ease the starting in the cold particularly with the way things are at the moment.

Which in your opinion is the best: Fuchs TITAN GT1 5W-40 synthetic or Motul Specific 505.01?

And last

Which one will work better: Fuchs TITAN SINTOFLUID FE SAE 75W or Fuchs TITAN SINTOFLUID SAE 75W-80?

'Can be used where a VW50700 is recommended' is a very optimistic claim used by many oil manufacturers and offers no guarantee that an oil is actually suitable. Personally, I don't like Lucas because of the 'miracle' additives they sell. I just don't trust what they have to say. We don't sell them as they don't offer anything special.

Out of the 505.01 specific and GT1, I'd go for the GT1 as it's a better blend.

There isn't really much difference between the 75w and 75w-80, I'd probably go for the 75w, but either is fine.

Yes, that’s the one. I have bought it mislead by the A5/B5 specification in a 507.00 oil. I'm not that happy with it, as I found some oil consumption were in the Motul 505.01 I didn't.

Over here it’s not easy to find Fuchs, nevertheless I’ve found a shop that can order it, so I’ve already ordered the 75w-80 and just waiting for the GT1 quote.
If I can’t get it, I will go back to the Motul, or ask you a quote for the GT1 delivered to Portugal.

Hi, iv just had my leon serviced at a Seat dealership and on the invoice it says that they have used 5W-40 oil (i normally use 5w-30), is there any 5W-40 oil that meets VW 507 00 spec as i cant seem to find any?

Just want to know as i have a DPF on my car and as that is the only part of the car not covered by warranty i want to make sure its not going to get damaged with the wrong oil in the car!

Edit: It is a CR engine incase it makes a difference.

It depends on whether the powertrain warranty is no longer in effect.

There are 5w40 engine oils that meet Daimler and BMW specs, and are very very similar to ones that meet VAG 507.00 -- basically the same additive package, just slightly more viscous base oil.

Typically, however, when a shop makes a substitute for the correct oil spec, they use a lesser oil and not one that's just as good or even better. So you should definitely make inquiries.

Ok! Found a list of approved VW 507.00 oils, and also had the dealer email over the spec sheet of the oil they used, it does not meet the correct VW standard for my car (they used Total Quartz 9000 for anyone who wants to know), iv pointed this out and now the service guy is calling his area manager to confirm.

If anybody is interested here is a link to list of all approved VW 507.00 oils as of 20/06/10 (they are all 5w-30). VW507.00 is for diesels with a DPF.

As it is the wrong oil will the filter need to be replaced too?
