Literally just bought some 550s yesterday Phil - is that what you're running now?

Prebs is after a set of 550s with adaptors I believe.

I thought we both we after a set of 550 since we´ll be runing similar setup. So you´re going for a set of 630? Is this Bill´s spec?

OK, and so it starts again... :)

My SQS synchro gearbox is now paid for and will shortly be on order once I'm able to send them my Peloquin diff so they can build the box up and ship it to me ready to fit as-is, like Bill did with his dog box.

The Cupra is now over at a friend's house who helped do a large majority of all the actual spanner work last time we had it all apart and tonight he began stripping bits off in preparation to remove the engine from the car completely.

Not a great pic but here she is on a mate's trailer arriving late at night at my friend's house, ready for the next installment of go-faster toys. As I'd lost 3rd gear round Castle Combe I didn't want to risk driving it in case I ended up losing the lot. With bits of metal rattling around in the bottom of the box and a severe blowing exhaust manifold it's not the nicest sounding car to move anywhere at the minute.

Taking the engine out completely will allow easier access to the gearbox and also gives me the chance to sort a few things all in one go while the engine is out, namely easier access to remove the turbo to send off for more hybrid work (K03-2283), the manifold for porting by Bill and the head to swap out for a large port from an AGU/AEB engine with new exhaust guides and valve stem seals so I can rest assured this is all covered.

If temptation gets the better of me I may also end up tarting a few things up while we're at it ;)

While talks are ongoing with CR regarding the K04 2283 hybrids I am holding fire before sending my turbo away so I can be more confident I won't run into any of the surging issues experienced by a couple of members. See this thread for full details and latest updates regarding this.

My trusty technician Dale will be posting updates and developments in my thread as and when he takes more things apart so watch this space :D

As an aside, temptation also went ahead and got the better of me last weekend when I ended up buying this little bad boy as a new daily driver:

In the few miles I've covered already I have to say it's one of the most fun cars I've ever driven with plenty of smiles per gallon. It absolutely loves to be thrashed and laps up the bends like a go kart on rails, phenomenal handling with such a sharp, precise turn in. You can just easily feel exactly what it's doing at any given time while it urges to go round each bend just a little bit faster than you'd first anticipated. A great little hot hatch that will undoubtedly be seeing some track abuse in the not too distant future [B)]

I had my 106 gti for 1 year and it took it's toll on my current acount thats for sure! Mine was port and polished, ram air kit, 3-2-1 mani and de-cat made 152BHP on RR :D was foooking quick and LOUD :cartman: i loved it but just sooo many things went wrong (10 months £2800 in repairs) :blink:
But it was Awsome body and mind :p

If this one starts costing anywhere near that sort of money it'll be shown the door. It's got a filter, air feed, decat and backbox which makes it a little loud for my liking but I'm leaving this one as-is purely for day-to-day fun and occasional track abuse when the mood takes me :)

I figured it was now or never while I'm still at an age to enjoy it before moving onto something with more status and refinement next. It's the kind of car that I struggle to drive economically when it loves being chucked about but all good fun - it'll do for a few months to keep me entertained and beats driving the 1.0 I had before, though that also raised a few smiles down the byways and through the fields much to the disbelief of the tractors and discoverys I used to pass along the way :happy:

Haha when you say a little too loud i had 32 houses sign a pertician (excuse the spelling) to stop me going down there street as it was "too loud" lmao :cartman: but the do hande for fun i had mine on spaxx adjustables all round like a go kart! :funk:

Not a large port rob. Shame on you. Get your small port ported. Will be better with your smallish turbo.

I like the 106. The misses has had a few saxo's in the past and they are great handling little cars.

It's a tough decision on this one Alex. Whatever happens I'm going to remove the head to get the exhaust guides and valve stem seals replaced as I'm suspicious mine are worn.

The car was consuming a litre of oil every 1000 miles with no visible signs of any leaks, hence it must be being burnt somewhere. I only ever got a puff of smoke on overrun, say if I left the car in 4th down a hill sat at ~3,500 RPM and then hit WOT

A compression test showed that the rings appear to be OK and the catch tank isn't collecting much waste so it all points towards the exhaust guides and stem seals, though I can't be certain.

If I'm going to the trouble of removing the head and replacing these seals it almost makes sense for me to go large port considering the surge issues that some members have experienced with these 2283 spec K04 hybrids to date - though this is also contributed to by the small AR of the hotside in comparison to the much larger 2283 trim compressor wheel.

With a ported wastegate, clearanced housing and cutback turbine wheel this ought to alleviate most of these issues, which is what LOBA Motorsport do with theirs. The extra flow that these turbos are capable of producing (especially with a 3" TIP) suggests that I also need to raise the VE of the engine, either with cams or porting so it's something I'm reluctantly opting for.

There is a member in Greece running one of these hybrids with a ported wastegate, cutback wheel and NA cams that isn't seeing any issues - still running a small port head which I'd prefer to keep spool times as low as possible, but if I'm already going to the trouble of removing the head anyway... :shrug:

I'm also under the impression this might allow for more timing advance if flow capacity can be increased and I'm told the cost of porting a small port is equal to getting hold of a standard large port? Is there any advantage of ported small port vs normal large port?

forget the misnoma that largeport is laggy - wellys hybrid k04 on largeport outspooled yours!
;)

when at the 300+bhp level, instant punch and hit of torque is not going to be as fast as more progressive build where traction is maintained remember.. in fwd

and... hybrid k03 spec I have commissioned one.. and its not 2283 wheel in it

Can you confirm whether it's the 2280 wheel that's been opted for use in the K03 hybrid and whether it will use a cut back turbine wheel?

I'm also currently in discussions with LOBA Motorsport to hear their thoughts and recommendations on this.

I wasnt saying that a largeport is mega laggy, or much more laggy than a standard small port, but a ported small port should outflow a standard largeport with ease.

When you say outflow, do you mean perform with higher efficiency (greater performance vs less lag compared to OE large port) or simply larger overall ports for more total airflow (if there is such a distinction)?

As I don't plan on going BT (famous last words...) I don't want to it to flow massive amounts more than it needs to for this application where unnecessary lag might be induced, though the real life differences appear minimal.

nah... I dont see it.. not even jp's magic - and cost vs just buy a largeport.. its a no brainer.. largeport wins hands down

I cant confirm its spec no.. sorry. not until its tested.. its not 2280

Thanks for posting the printouts. It looks as though Welly's torque would have climbed sooner and stronger than mine were it not for the initial dip at ~2800 RPM

What sort of timescales are we looking at for testing this new hybrid Bill? As Dale will have my turbo off within the next week or so I'll need to make a decision as to which way I'm going soon, depending on what LOBA advise of course.

Appreciate you can't reveal much at this stage and the K03 hotside flow potential is an unknown but what region of power is the compressor rated too? Are we talking 320+ potential to match the K04s we have seen recently or very low 300 figures?
