HIDs on FL Leon

Has anyone fitted HIDs to a FL without having Bulb Warnings?

I have tried everything with my hids-direct CANBUS kit with Warning Cancellers and my HIDs are playing silly beggars. Flashing on and off, shutting down each side randomly.

Is it because of Auto Lights?

Sean,

Unfortunately it's the same for me, the exact same kit and the same problems, if your's is a relatively new kit, the ballast should be the new 'digital' ones, so take the warning cancellers off and try it then, I did that on mine, they don't shut down but I still get a bulb warning when I turn them on and strangely when I flick the main beam on?
Just give it a try, should get them working for you, am gonna try my resistors that I have spare to see if that stops the bulb error, stupid newer can-bus systems :(

Danny.

At least it's not just me then!

Yeah they're a new kit with the black digital ballasts, i had the problems so got the warning cancellers and still had problems!

I've been in contact with hids-direct and i'm going to try the can-bus pro kit to see it that helps?

I'll let you know how i get on, probably at the weekend now.

Yeah sounds good, how much did that set you back? I bought mine for my Leon and they don't work correctly so maybe they will refund mine? Am gonna try resistors first though :)

Well I bought the original kit for about £50 which didn't work properly and they said I'd need the cancellers. I thought I had bought the right kit but apparently not. I bought the cancellers then and it was the same so I moaned a bit more.

Because of the hassle and having to pay for postage to return the ballasts they have agreed to swap free of charge :)

I just hope to god these ones work!

Sean,

Any luck with these? Just tried my resistors, no luck :( Let me know please buddy so I can get onto them asap :)

I was meant to be sending the ballast's off to them but i've needed the car and can't be bothered setting up my halogens, so i'm going to their shop one day next week to swap them over. It's not too far away from mine, only in Manchester.

It's just a pain i can't turn the cold diagnostics off via VAGCOM because of our newer ECU's!

I got the H7R bulbs from hids-direct and i'm not as impressed with the 'anti-glare' as with the HIDS4U H7R's. I may buy a pair of theirs instead.

I'll let you know how i get on, if i have no luck when i'm there i may ask for my money back and leave HID's until something more compatible comes along :(

ok guys on the FL leon there fitted with an uprated BCM a bulb control module, which doesnt like the idea of the low voltage lights..... it fused the BCM in mine (350 stealers wanted to replace it)

What i did was wire them directly to the Battery, it removes all warning errors and they turn on straight away with no flickering or on and off's that you see in some HID's! They work perfectly and can't complain! :)

Hope this helps! :)

Sniper, what do you mean? How did you do it? :) Sean, yeah I have H7R from HIDS-Direct, alot cheaper then the ones from HIDS4U, get what you pay for I guess :)

Difficult to describe mate, i'll get pics up for you later..... probs tmoz now its gone dark!! But i had problems with mine and found the solution was tacking the power from the battery instead of from the current bulb holders!

I ordered some 4300K H7R 'bulbs' from fleabay to replace the 6000K H7Rs I got in my original hids4u Ultimate kit (for my FR). The cheapo bulbs were very obviously lower quality. They did the job, sort of, but when I removed the kit to put it back to stock before selling the car, I noticed the anti-glare coating was peeling really badly and it hadn't peeled on the 6000K H7Rs from hids4u when I swapped them out. Might have been one of the reasons for the abysmal beam pattern...

If I can't have factory xenons for whatever reason on future cars, I'm going to stick to the bog standard yellow candles or maybe just the highly-string premium bulbs that give a little more brightness. HID kits are too much faff for the benefits they give IMHO, especially if the rumours are true about them failing MOTs in the next couple of years.

I agree with you shrimp, beam pattern is dire!!

I get flashed 24/7 at night time!! but i have got 10k's so they do look quite blue/bright!

I think for 100 quid for HIDs it's a better spend of money than 800 for fctory xenons! haha!

10kK bulbs won't be as bright as lower colour temp bulbs and will be very blue(!).

The factory bi-xenons give you a spot-on aim and beam pattern, the same quality and power of light for full beam as dipped and the AFS system is much more useful than I'd expected: the way it seems to guess where you need the path ahead lighting up on dark country roads is quite surreal. You also get the beautiful look of projection xenons, washers built into the bumper and of course warranty, regulatory compliance and 100% legality.

The downside is the cost, as you point out, but as part of an options pack or on a second hand car, they're better value. Personally I'm glad I plumped for them. :D

what do you mean you cant turn your cold diagnostics off? ive had them turned off for my led's in my number plates so i dont see why you cant turn off those off. im pretty sure you can select to turn off anyone of the error sensors, shark did mine no problem.

We have an updated control module so we can't change Byte 18 (where the cold diagnostics is) with VAGCOM without complete guesswork...

So can you still turn them on and off as normal? haha just trying to understand how you've done it mate :p

Yep basically it's wired directly to the battery and directly to the lights switch! Really difficult to describe, i had a friend do it !

I can turn my lights on/off without the ignition on, which is actually quite a nifty feature because i leave them on if going into a shop for 5 mins it looks really nice! (just remember to turn them off if leaving it for a while :p )

i'll text the guy who did it for me tmoz ! :)

Are they not just wired up through a relay so the signal from the cars loom triggers the rely that allows direct power from the battery to the ballast therefore takes off any strain caused using the original cars loom to ignite the bulb, that's why you normally get the flash when turning them on.

This prevents damaging the cars loom and possibly doesn't effect the warning light on dash as the current used, is to power the relay and not the low current ballast?

The flash when turning on is due to the 13,000V or whatever required to ignite the gas inside the bulb, once this is ignited, the voltage is reduced. Basically it seems our FL Leons have a new type of bulb error system, unlike my old pre-FL Leon, this new one actually tells you which bulb to check, and it appears that the warning cancellers etc don't work, so yes, maybe a VAG-COM thing? If anyone can have a play about?

Yes so if you wire it up so the feed wire for the headlights from the car loom is powering a relay instead of the ballast directly, does the sensor not pick up that it's a lower current because the current used to power the relay is the same as powering a normal halogen bulb?
