There is no problem with going custom and it has been tested over and over again comparing custom to a 'tried and tested' one (check out redline mag this month as an example) with hardly to no difference in performance. Only thing I will say is make sure you know the company you are going to if you go custom, see the work they have done before and make judgement that way. Many offer lifetime guarantees now so no risk really and you can take it to a place if anything goes wrong as opposed to having to deal with posting it back to a company etc

Just my two cents :)

Gota powerflow on my LC with oval tail pipe. Its a resonated system but with a 3" downpipe and de-cat. its released oodles of power, turbo spools up 1k lower and has a gorgeous sound to it. Can just about do the subtle sneeky at low revs, but when you boot it it raws - then at 4k it just opens up and sings! Lovely rasp to it at top end too!

Mates gota Miltek with downpipe de-cat too, also sounds pretty lovely!

Powerflow build quality is always second to none

ive had custom made zorsts before and never had any problems with them, the guys i use (WWW.ZORSTEC.COM) always offer lifetime gaurantee anyway, and as it happens i just dropped my lcr off this morning for a full 3" turbo back with no cat and no middle box and its only costing me £500 due to a bit of haggling :) now tell me that aint a bargain when pipewerx etc are quoting nearly £900!! for the same thing.
i wanted a 6x4 oval tip but they didnt have any in stock so i went for this one, hope it looks ok

Think im gonna go down the custom route then, its a lot cheaper and cant find any negatives about having this done.

The machinery is all state of the art and their finished products look and sound ace.

Will post up pics when done.

dont go for custom, more hassle than its worth just get a miltek or blueflame, tryed and tested, fit perfectly with no problems, proved performance gains and good built quality. the custom jobby will probably end up knocking everywhere on the chassis, fitting poorly. and probably no cheaper

while milteks and blueflame are good, custom exhaust are equally as good i no tuners that only use custom exhaust fitters on the cars, i've had experience with both custom and milteks, i've had custom exhaust fitted to my leon for over 3 years with no issues at all comes with lifetime warranty for labour and parts can't say fairer than that also increase gain by 12bhp and 10lbs of torque from a turboback system.

If you want it for performance gains, don't buy custom. Buy a well know brand that has been prefabricated in a factory and has been dyno tested.
There is nothing wrong with custom exhaust fabricators providing you go to one that isn't a chain brand (Powerblow etc) look for a custom exhaust fabricator with experience.
I've had all three exhausts fitted by a company called Pro-Speed, Some of the best welding out there and I've even taken my car to a garage in North Wales and the Mechanic knew where It had come from!
Charlie from Pro-speed is an utter legend. I've had cars that exceed 230bhp on a KO3s with one of his exhausts fitted and I'm not saying it was exhaust that cause the power hike but if they were rubbish It would be quite restrictive!

Look for a fabricator with experience and knowledge and inform them your more concerned about performance than sound and they should be able to rustle you up something special. I'm just happy I hit 233bhp @ Stock with just a new exhaust system.

I will put my exhaust up against anyones (From the Cat Back this time as I purchased the DP which I wish I hadn't as its a pile of ****) for flow tests.

I utterly despise it when people say this.

x2 people that claim custom doesnt' give you power gains clearly have never fitted a custom exhaust to there car so they wouldn't no i got 237bhp from my first leon cupra with custom turboback exhaust (de-cat) with standard intercooler, standard turbo and standard recirc valve it was a beast. some people are like sheep i think follow the masses are too scared to try something different because these sold called big companies tell them that everything else is shite

On an NA car, it's proven time and time again that with an exhaust system you need to extensively flow test it to make sure that it retains back pressure, this is a FACT and a very good reason to buy off the shelf, this is extremely important for the cat-back system but even more so when it comes to downpipes & manifolds. For a turbocharged cars, it rarely matters who provides you with a cat-back system as the turbo charger and the design of the downpipe produce the back pressure but you've admitted youselves that the 'chains' do not always provide the best workmanship, sadly 90% of market is controlled by these said chains and you'll do well to find a handful of independant reputable fabricators in any region, I for one have none local but 4 Powerflow centres within a 10mile radius.

It's up to you, take the risk or buy with confidence from someone who know's what they're doing. Lucky you if you happen to have John Smith's Auto's est. 1950 right next door who knows what he's doing but most of us just have people who have no idea or who don't care.

mine was factory designed for a mk4 golf

got it modified by a performance exhaust specialist to fit my mk1 LC

and now modified more to increase the noise

It sounds pretty awesome, pops and bangs and... the TAILPIPES are unique, i've NOT seen them on any mk1 LC and they look the tits.

but....

I'm going to get a Miltek because performance>noise imo

Do me a favour, firstly don't be so f*cking rude and secondly next time you disagree with a point that someone makes, be grown up about it and put your opinion across like a respectful adult. This may help:

"I see your point JamJay but from previous experience I disagree and this is why...".

blah blah aint respectful didn't come on here to have and argument with people that think they no it all, you can read figures out of a books or on graphs but personally the proof is how they car performs. as i said before in similar topic thread having experienced both milteks turboback system and john ashley's turboback system on same spec of car personally found no difference, the only honest difference i found was that the john ashley system(custom) felt more eager top end which isn't a bad thing

I didn't say that I knew it all, I was offering an opinion on a public forum for the most painless way of purchasing an exhaust system with no headaches. It's all very well being a keyboard warrior but you need to remember that in writing things cannot always be interpreted in the way the speech can. All I was asking for was a little respect in the posts that you made and not to come out with "I despise people" or "people that claim custom doesnt' give you power gains clearly have never fitted a custom exhaust to there car so they wouldn't no" without clarifying first. For the record I did have a custom exhaust on and NA car and the drop in performance was horrific, replaced for a well made import from Japan and the car was a world apart, hence I have knowledge in the matter and a valid opinion to offer.

I'll remove my 'childish' comments now that we seem to have established that nothing was meant with malice but I think you should edit your posts according also so that this thread can go back on topic and continue to help anyone searching for advice.

well i'm sorry you've had a bad experience with custom exhaust but the reason i trusted john with my exhaust work cause he had a golf mk4 monster track car with 1.8t engine in it 450bhp @ flywheel with is own custom built ehaust on it, he share with me a few trial and errors with getting the right exhaust setup for the 1.8t engine cause backpressure was the main concern with running no cat , 2.5"downpipe is perfect for standard-350bhp cars and 3" downpipe for 350 and above. and most reputable companies offer lifetime warranty ,

well anyway, when you ladies (JOKE) have finished with the handbag war ive just back from picking my car up from zorstec and it is FOOKING AMAZING!!
as stated its a 3" straight thru turbo back with the above tip on and its sounds exactly how i wanted it, a nice low rumble but when it opens up under load i nearly wet myself its fooking unreal
cant begin to tell you all how pleased i am with it and thats just the 30 minute ride home stuck in traffic most of the way in the freezing freezingness of oop north
all ive done i laugh to myself all the way home, money WELL spent in my eyes, i hate to stoke the fire of discontent or slag anyone elses car but i think a miltek/bf etc would struggle to give me exactly what i was looking for, which is why i always go custom.
just a couple of days to wait now and my new jetex kit will be here too.....oooo its like christmas come early :)
pics and vids to follow :D
