I think Econ takes the air from inside instead of heating the cold air from outside - so it's not as clean as it's like being in a plain.
In mid July you can tell that if the economy button is on the air con is not working it's like being in a old car where the person sets their fan to cool and it just blows the warm air around the car!
ok peeps ive actually just got out the hand book and ive never had to with any other car just to out mine and everyones minds at rest:::

I'm not a brain surgeon, but using ECON will only stop the chiller cooling the cabin air if it needs cooled. As must have been said many times before, there is no electro-mechanical clutches on the compressors on these cars, even in ECON the compressor is running on low duty - sort off "bypass". So the only time that ECON saves fuel and stops taking power is when the ambient air is hotter than you want the cabin air to be - under normal conditions the A/C would "trim" some heat off by demanding the compressor to do some work. Does that make more sense?

That is a very inaccurate translation as I've said Fabia, Polo 9N, Ibiza MK4 and probably a lot more newer VAG cars, do not very stop the compressor spinning, the ECON button only stops it being able to work as a chiller by compressing and passing liquid R134 into the evaporator.
Yes, but only mainly in hot countries!
I must own up to leaving my wife's Polo in ECON most of the time (I can't give a good reason for doing that other than saving fuel!).

lol yeh does it, I don't bother with it tbh I thought it only really would make a difference when it is really working hard like when we have a heat wave but then that is when you must have it on a long journey stuck in traffic got to have it on!
Yes, when you have ECON displayed, A/C is effectively off... so you should save fuel/increase mpg as you have taken a load off the engine.
oow so basically ive never used it and i always use the air con unit so tht means ive bin using fuel !
