sorry to ask a silly question guys but after reading 9 pages and various links to pictures etc etc can someone point me in the direction of the best full kit to buy?

Try and get as much metal in the pipes as you can & a large metal pancake pipe.
After fitting and using the new full SFS turbo kit inc pancake I can say that it works good, not too hard to fit and include everything you need to stop any boost leaks and increase boost power a bit. (I did notice a difference.)

on the basis of Slys comments, I'd go for the Allards kit as the majority of it is metal. However it doesn't include the turbo outlet pipe or the two hoses that come out of either side of the intercooler, which means you'd have to spend quite alot more to get a complete kit!!!

Fuel lines rubbing - no. I've attached them to the pipe itself.

Oh and yeah - the kits included everything. Well, everything apart from rubber 'O' rings for the metal valves which connect to the SEAT valves (i.e. on the IC)... but I just took these off the existing pipes.

Sly, you had to use the rubber O-rings from your original pipes, did you find these were ok as the O-rings on my pipes look a bit nackered as they are quite flat and I imagine this is part of the reason why my pipes are leaking!!! I'm wondering if i could use any kind of O-ring for this purpose, although the O-rings on the pipes seem to have a flat edge on them.

I've found them alright and haven't had a problem. At first I fitted the news pipes with no O-ring, lol! I immediately realised my error and saught the rings.

I imagine that the flat edge isn't really an issue. If you can get an O-ring to fit, then I would think it's as simple as that.

If you think you may have a boost leak then check out some videos on youtube of how to test for a leak in a turbo system using a pressure gauge :)

there's no doubt i have boost leaks as the turbo outlet hose is almost flapping around in the turbo housing it's so loose. Also the pipes that go in either side of the intercooler show signs of oil weeping from them. I reckon I'm losing so much boost pressure because of this but the best part of £400 to fix it seems a lot of money!!!! I wonder if SFS would sell the connectors separately from the pipes?!?!?!

Mine was like that for a while, bad times.

I felt the same when I was in your position but since fitting them I haven't looked back.

As for the connectors seperately, yes I think they do. You might have to be very specific when ordering though because I got a 'gomo' vibe when talking to them.

Upgrade!

Evening all.

I have finally decided to go down the route of replacing my 100k old pipework on my PD150

I really could do with some proper advice regarding what to order. At first I thought it was just easy to order the allards kit, with the EGR delete pipe. However I have now seen other bits on here, such as the ally inserts in the stock FMIC and talk of new O rings etc.

Can somebody give me a list of whats needed to upgrade from the stock pipework to the improved stuff?

Also, the pancake pipe that everyone mentions, is this available? I have seen one on here from SFS and others too, is this needed when upgrading, or can I add this at a later date when I have more cash?

I'm stuck too....:confused:

This is what i want to know as my FR 150 TDI has 113,000 on the clock and i want to replace all the boost pipes, pancake pipes etc etc. Would also like to fit a EGR delete.

Can any of you chaps give us a list of what is needed to make up a full kit of hoses/pipes etc please??

Also a rough estimate of price from Allards would be a help

i'd avoid allards simply because their work aint that great, plus they take your money and then usually theres a long wait. put it this way they now trade under a different name!!

sfs new kit is much better and for a mildly tuned tdi, they are fine. However once you up the boost etc, they become bit hit miss.

if your standard then go sfs, mapped then maybe sfs should be ok. if you have money then get a good exhaust company to knock up som pipes (hard to beat). with o rings, they should be ok. however vag have updated them slightly.

the top pipes were easy but the pancake pipe was a right pain in the arse.

in my opinion both allards and sfs had there down points but they are specialists in their field but overall the allards kit was very good (dont bother with the intercooler) and the only down side to allards was the delivery time andintructions, which were vauge to say the least.

I agree with MJ. Top pipes were easy, pancake was extremely fiddly.
Although my top pipes took longer because one blew off on the test run & my pancake held fine.

In reply to john_tdi to clear up - I have SFS pipes & my car is mapped to the max.

carl325, as for what to get first I suggest buying the Turbo outlet to Intercooler piping kit with pancake from SFS.

If any pipes were to go, and be the (old) pancake, then you'll need a tow as the pancake explodes. Mine did. One HELL of a bang, shattered metal everywhere. Ripped the brackets holding it from my car.

When you can afford the next lot, get the Intercooler to EGR (Turbo) kit.

You can sort the EGR delete anytime though?

Oh - and what benefit does fitting an EGR delete give? I thought it was a bit of a grey area... anyone care to enlighten me?


BTW, lastly, I fitted all my pipes with no instructions whatsoever. SFS didn't provide me with any. I'm also a complete car newbie & managed it fine. Bit of tape, some prittstick, sorted. (JOKE).

Ok thanks for the advice on that. Think i'll go with what your suggesting with the SFS pipework and just do a bit of it at a time. The EGR is just an idea at the moment, if it looks real gunked up then maybe i 'll get it taken off and cleaned along with the inlet manifold.

The clips that hold the pipes on the EGR etc are a pain to get on and off if i remember as on my Golf 150 TDI i took a hose off by the EGR and couldn't get it back on with the original clips so had to use a cable tie!


How much to SFS charge for their hose kits?

I can imagine it's a pain from looking at it :(

I think it was just under £190 for the Turbo outlet to Intercooler pipes, including aluminium pancake. Comes with all clips and adapters required.

I also believe that you will get a better kit than what I've got as they've had more time to develop it. For one, I'm pretty sure the pancake will be better. I have photos of the kit as it came on my Flickr.

The Intercooler to EGR was a bit more I think. There is a lot more piping though.

If you need any advice when fitting the pancake part etc just ask. I'll first note that yes, I did have to modify the wheel arch plastics cover thing - otherwise the piping would have been touching the driveshaft.

EDIT: And by "modify" the plastics, I do mean hack away chunks out of it.

Don't bother with the Allards kit. A load of rubbish!!

I fit one to my TDI before I sold it, nothing but vibrations, bad fitting and zero gains.
