Schumacher dropped from 6th to 12th at Monaco after opportunistic move

F1 has always been about everything other than fair out-and-out racing and driver skill. I've hated Schumacher ever since he deliberately took out Hill to make sure he won the championship and Hill didn't - disgusting.

Damon hill is a legend.

Cobblers *as I call him* isn't all that now that he isn't in a quick car. As I have said before, he has never really driven a poop F1 car so he has always looked really good. he has been out driven this season by his comparatively inexperienced team mate. I don't think Cobblers is any better than the rest really.

I don't think Cobblers will be in F1 next year, he's a has been.

To be honest mate, he's beaten every team mate (Irvine, Barrichello, Massa; and has even overhauled Rosberg on pace for the last 2 races) he's had. Going further back, he's also had the beating of team mates such as Brundle, Patrese, Verstappen and Herbert. So to say "he isn't all that" is a bit daft IMO.

You don't win 7 championships by being "no better than the rest."

Also, I think you're forgetting how much of a dog the Ferrari was when he joined back in 1996... they hadn't won a title since 1979. His team mate's never got close to him in equal machinery.

Whether he's as good as he was, that's debatable, but I think we should judge that at the end of the season, when the all-important points are counted.

Back on topic anyway, Mercedes have said they won't appeal the decision.

Race of Champions where Schumi can't nudge a competitor as they are behind a partition has seen Schumi come in the top 3 for many years. He's as good in a X-Bow as he is in a Focus as he is in an F1 car.

I don't condone any of the things he did with Hill back in the 90's, but if you look at people like him who have an absolute passion to succeed, sometimes in the back of their mind if their not closely managed it can become at any cost. It's what makes them championship winners in the first place - absolute hunger.

I know Ferrari spent inordinate money getting that car right to make Schumi champion, but to come out of retirement after 3 years is a long time in racing.

To compare, look what happened when Fisichella moved to a great car (a Ferrari) when Massa was injured - stone dead last most of the time. I'm sure he's won races.

I don't think Michael will have the same appetite he did, but whether you like him or not he's still an inordinately good driver.

Nobody can deny he is an exceptionally good driver, but winning at 'any' cost including deliberately taking out your rivals is arrogant and very un-professional, or maybe too professional. Hunger and passion to succeed should NOT come at the expense of sheer arrogance and deliberately cheating to win.

I'm a massive Schumi fan, and purely because of the way he drives on a good day (Spa in the wet vs Damon Hill 1995 I think was one of his greatest drives: linky).

However, my loyalty is pushed hard when you see some the incidents with Hill, Villeneuve, the McLaren's, the A1 Ring 1-2 switch incident (last lap), the Monaco qualifying debacle. I've sat there will my head in my hands and thought 'why', wasn't it enough to be brilliant, why soil your reputation and your record with such a badly conceived and desperate maneuver?

Tainted a great career and why I think he'll never been seen as 'best of the best'.

Fully agree and well put.

Interesting dynamic is that you can be 7 times world champion, 91 wins out of 256 races, a living legend, give massively to charity, give back to your industry (Michael Schumacher karting schools), a UNESCO spokesperson, but whether you like it or not, you'll be defined as much for the handful of things you did wrong as you everything great you ever did, or will do in the future.

A sober lesson to us all.

although note that when he raced with brundle, once brundle settled into the team they were very level, with brundle actually beaten MSC in the second half of the season...

Having said, that i dont doubt his ability behind the wheel, and i doubt most people appreicate his ability to help develop a car and give constructive feedback.

T'is a good job that the results from a full season are what really matter then! I fully understand your point though.

It's like last season, Jenson wasn't the best driver in the second half of the season, but his early results carried him through. He still drove very well though, kept picking up points, and you have to say, when the end of the season came, he deserved it.

The FIA are now reporting that they are to review the rule as they admit its open to being interpreted more than one way.

It also seems that while it had been reported previously that all the other teams had a different view to mercedes (so they would if they benefit from MSC being penalised) that in fact some other teams have sympathy with them.

So come on FIA, lets apply some commone sense, clarify the rule, admit the system was flawed and inconsistently applied (previously when finishing under safety car yellow flags were waved) and simply reverse the finishing positions of MSC and ALO

You cocked up, you changed the rule regarding the location of the safety car line and didnt assess how this effects other rules.

Agreed!

The unfortunate thing is, this is the FIA we're talking about, and there's about as much chance as me winning Miss World (I'm a bloke) as there is of them overturning the decision at a later date.
