Got my sounds sorted today.

Turned out the Pheonix Gold amp was kaput, the reason why it blew up the 6x9s
I got some new 6x9s from Kicker (under warranty) and dug out an old Rockford amp I had lying around. Lucky I never throw anything away, I nearly sold it to a mate for £20 last month! Anyway, I bought a 10" sub enclosure and cut a hole for a 12 in it so that it doesnt take up too much space.

Considering I paid next to nothing for this install (just over £100 including the parcel shelf) I'm well impressed, the junk that I had lying about turned up trumps.

Off to Jackson Tuning tomorrow to have them fit a new steering rack (£65 lol), mine is properly rattling now - anyway the carb might have to wait till next week. Was planning on rolling the arches next week too if I ever get round to it. Not enough hours in the day.

I've been having some serious Pierburg issues lately. My carb took a dump on me on Friday and I ended up getting towed over to Jackson Tuning on the back of an RAC van lol

Phil replaced the carb with another Pierburg which he had lying around, but through no fault of his it is now causing problems too. he offered to fix it (he is the best and has been a great help to me recently) but I've decided Pierburgs are not for me. I hate them long time.

Since I can't afford bike carbs I've decided I'm getting a brand new Weber fitted on Friday.

Anyone got any feedback on carbs? The RAC bloke said that Pierburgs are awesome, but a little over complicated - he said he'd never found one he couldn't fix until he saw mine - turns out he owns 3 polos and loves them lol - anyway I don't believe him I think they're gash... discuss...

I had a pierburg on my 88 1.05 Polo and tbh it never gave me any big issues, auto choke worked as it should and with regular servicing it went well. Only ever gave issues on the coldest of mornings and even then some throttle would sort it.

Had a distributor problem where the car would cut out and refuse to restart for a while which we all blamed the carb for at first, but it wasn't.

All that said my mum had a 1.8 MK2 Golf Syncro and the carb on that was shocking, drank fuel and worked when it wanted (it had done 120,000). Swapped it for a webber which still drank fuel but went like a fuel injected GTi!

Keep the pinstripes on the side propper 80's cool, but loose the parade stickers ;)

there's a pierburg on Claire's mk1 cabriolet. I never managed to break it despite fiddling in an uneducated fashion lol

haha I'm almost considering refurbing one of the Pierburgs after those replies, thanks for that. The RAC man was determined to prove to me that they were good carbs, but he was defeated by the shatness of my special one.

having said that I was determined to lose it so it didn't really matter what you guys said ;)

@flappy I was looking at some Dellortos actually, would be great if i could find something second hand and cheap but to be honest I can't take the hassle right now, I just want everything working in the least possible time. There is a big exception here and that is if someone came up with some cheap second hand bike carbs (ready to go on with mani etc.), then and only then would I deal with the aggro of setting them up and buying extra bits to make them work. Alas, the bay has been bad to me and I have ended up paying top dollar for new Weberage.

Anyway, the thought of Mylo fiddling with Claire's "carb" in an uneducated fashion has unsettled me, I'm off for a nap.

Heard about a 1.4 bottom end with a GT head and bike carbs up for grabs at NoRice yesterday. Apparently the 1.4 has only done 24k. Anyway, it's all up to my mate who might be getting it if the price is right then he wants to swap it for my lump because he can't afford the running costs of it (yeah really makes sense I know). Would work out perfect for both of us, I get power he gets economy and reliability, we just need somewhere to carry out the two transplants. Anyway, pie in the sky right now, not sure if it will happen but I do know if he doesn't pick up a lump sometime soon he will be walking cos his mk1 golf is on it's last legs!

Anyway, bought a chrome rocker cover and gasket off ebay a few days back, should be here soon and also getting the Weber fitted tomorrow.

Oh yeah, got a free bumper last night too! i only need the metal bit because mine is a bit wonky but anyway i went to put it in the boot and the fecking linkage on the lock seems to have gone so I've got no boot right now lol fun times

Right so Friday saw me down at Southern Carbs where they had a nice new Weber waiting for me. I had them install it and set it up for me mainly because of the manual choke installation but also because I know f all about carbs...

The choke was installed brilliantly - you can't tell it's not factory, I am really pleased with the whole thing. The car runs fantastically and feels quite a bit quicker which surprised me tbh.

So this morning I decided to pop on my new chrome rocker cover. I bought a gasket from Egay and was eager to get it on since my engine bay is tainted by the original (rusty) old one on there.

First of all, I took off the old cam cover to find that the fleabay gasket I had was completely wrong. Nice.

After fitting the new cover over the old gasket I was nearly done. I was just tightening up the last bolt and POP

Yes, I snapped the bolt off in the head. Happy days. I'm now sitting in front of the PC waiting for the monaco GP to come on since I don't want to drive the bloody car with a huge hole in the rocker cover.

I've done the same thing, you've over tightened.

If you need a quick fix, you can ducktape the stud over the hole and it will drive.

The car will run without the stud however you will loose power and oil ''may'' escape.

Yarp, duct tape already applied actually, I just don't want to drive it if I don't have to.

So when you did it was it pretty easy to drill it out or was it a nightmare? I'm thinking this could be a mare in the making! I dont fancy replacing the block!

Can be a mare, what you have to do is remove to rocker cover and hopefully there will be enough of the bolt left sticking out to get something round it tight and unscrew it out.

My case i took it to my local VW specialist and they managed to drill into the remains of the bolt and extract it that way.

If you have to drill the bolt out and re thread it you have to be bloody careful about where the shards of metal go otherwise they'll cause issues later. I doubt you'll need a new block at all.

Marty, speak to big Stu ;)

He's had some practice with the easyouts already this year. Molegrips may be the answer but just in case drilling may be required.

If there is enough left to get grips on can't see it not undoing with mole grips
