Running rough, NOT COILPACKS OR MAF!!

Hi guys...
I was giving it some beans getting onto the A14 on tuesday night, and the car seemed to be hesitant at about 4000rpm, and then the EML came on, and started blinking intermittantly.
The car went into limp mode (i presume), and was vibrating badly while under any throttle. When i got home about 2 mins later, the car was idling rough, and still showing the EML.

I picked up a coilpack the next day, as I presumed thats what it would be having read the sticky at the top, and tried pulling off the loom clips to find the cylinder not firing. Much to my dismay, the idle got worse when i pulled the coilpack plug off each cylinder! Not a blown coilpack then...

Today i picked up a new Bosch MAF sensor, tried fitting that, and the fault still remains!

Ive had a quick poke about the engine bay, and cant find any loose or split hoses, breathers or boost leaks. I havent pulled the plugs yet, but i changed them about 20k ago, so i cant imagine its them.

So, does any one else have any further ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Dan

Need to get vagcom plugged in mate!

Could be a dodgy spark plug, they have been known to fall apart before. Could be an O2 sensor. Could be an injector etc etc. Best bet really is vag com

I think you'll find it is a coilpack.

As said, you need a diagnostic check on it.

I'd agree, I'm not convinced that the swap method of finding the faulty one always works.

Two mminutes with VAG-COM will have you going in the right direction...

Is that the full version of VAG-COM? Will it allow me to turn off the annoying 5mph deadlock, cancel the two-button-push to open all doors with the remote, and reset the TB? Anyone used this seller before? On last question, where the hell do i plug it in!?!

No you then need to buy the licence.
Plugs in under the ashtray pop off cover at the back.

I've not used that actual seller, but I deliberately chose a UK based seller. All the leads come from the same place, but if it's faulty then you can return it easier for a UK seller.

Yeah, there was a definite burning smell, although it was the misus who reported it, as ive got a cold!!

I wouldnt mind getting a full copy of VAG-COM anyway. How much is it for the licence? I take it you register/pay online?

Cheers for this fellas...

Right then,
Ive now purchased VAG-COM from the link above, and read the faults. All that came up is:

16684 – Random/Multiple cylinder misfire detected PO300-35-00 --
16685 – Shareware version. To decode all DTC’s please register/activate PO301-35-00

Im hoping the code means more to you guys, as i could have told you it was misfiring last week!!

I also did a readiness check, while the car was warming up, and let it get up to temperature. That gave results as below:

E.G.R – Passed
O2 sensor heating – Failed or Incomplete
O2 sensors – Failed or incomplete
Air Con – Passed
S.A.I – Passed
Evap. Emissions – Passed
Cat Heating – Passed
Cat Converters – Failed or incomplete

Are these 'failed' status reports related to the fault codes above?

Has anyone come across these codes before?

Thanks again fellas.

Still sounds like a coilpack failure

Code 16685 is coilpack 1 misfire :) (the shareware version will only tell you the first code and then list the numbers of the rest)

Well,
Today i picked up a set of coilpacks, fitted them, and cleared the fault log using VAG-COM.
The car is now fixed!!
Thanks for all your help guys, you have saved me some cash at a time when i need it most...

I got them from C.A.S in Wellingborough. 4 Bosch items for just over £94.

And for those out there who are struggling with a rough running car and want to check the coilpacks, the method of pulling injector plugs off at idle doesnt work for
s:censored:t!!

Many thanks again guys,
Dan:cheers:
