ibiza cupra sport 8v has a mind of its own???

hi all

well ive had my cupra for a little while now and its started to misbehave a lot!.

The problem with her is she revs herself every now and again up to 1500 rpm and stops every second or so (its like you pressing and letting go of the accelerator quickly) and every now and again the revs climb to 2500rpm but the scary thing is it does it on the move and up to now its nearly run into walls while turning several times!.

I have also noticed it reeks of fuel when its running but ive had vagcom on it and there was only one fault which is the throttle position actuator intermittently shorting, so im hoping someone can point me to where it is on the engine?

finally it also jerks like mad when you back off or as soon as you try to accelerate (this disappears almost immediately after the inital press of the pedal)

just one final question to all you 8v owners, does 192 miles sound about right to a full tank around town?

cheers

With the revving on its own milarky, check the idle control pipe isnt damaged, mine was and it went a bit mad sometimes, and depending on your driving style 192 miles from a tank is a bit low, iv been getting 220 but and i aint got the lightest right foot.

hi pander

thanks for the reply :)

is that the pipe that attatches to another one made of hard plastic? (left hand side of the engine near the top) there were 2 i replaced because they were split but its the same as before i did it

i dont really get much chance to boot it but the mpg meter rarely gets to 20mpg normally its about 15.2 mpg

sorry about my lack of internet know how, the picture is of the throttle body with the pipe in question, it comes out the top through a goldish coloured pipe, then goes into a soft squishy pipe, then into a nylon pipe which runs down to the drivers side of the car ? mine had somehow sheered or been cut near the top and wouldnt idle properly. but as you say youve changed that then maybe its your idle control valve. but i would get a second opinion on that as im first and foremost a truck mechanic with little experience on VAG stuff :D

for the idle problems id remove and clean out the idle control Valve. ( brake/carb cleaner will do it )

For the throttle position id clean the throttle body out, and check the wiring from the TB sensors that run across the back off the engine, seen alot of this breaking due to the heat.
if you can get a snap on diagnostic machine on it, reset the TB when youve finished

EDIT the wiring problems only seem to pop up on the 16v's but still worth checking.

thanks for the info, ill try that tomorrow :)

i have noticed that the pedal feels like its moving itself under my foot when i hold it at a steady speed, is that the actuator doing its thing?

ABout your mpg, if that round town mileage is lots of short journeys, then it's still a bit on the low side, but if you check the MFA you'll see scary low economy on these trips!

When mine is playing (which it *will be* again by Monday! I'm sick of a green drive ornament!) I generally get 350-400 miles per tank, with plenty of speeds I'm not going to post, but I have a lot of motorway use. Typical trip average around 35-38 by MFA over 70-odd miles in about an hour at rush time, with city driving at the end. If I only clock up about 700 miles in a week I've been quite quiet... I have had more on a long haul from Swindon late at night when I couldn't be bothered and decided to try hyper-miling... Did get a trip average of 48.2, but I really wouldn't want to drive like that all the time/often, but then if I did I'd not be in a GTi!

About the actuator and the pedal feel... The throttle control is basically an electrical sensor (think variable resistor stylee) on the end of the pedal which feeds signal voltage to the ECU which feeds the TB actuator. Wiring and cleaning stuff all sounds good, but if the pedal feels odd, are you sure the problem couldn't be at that end? Pretty sure there's no force-feedback to the pedal...

yeah its mostly short journeys i do but i did 70 miles of this weeks full tank on the motorway and it covered 65 miles on there and its now on 105 miles and half a tank of gas remaining

i wish one of you could come and drive it so you could feel what it does but as i say when it revs itself the pedal moves on its own under your foot it only moves a tiny bit but you feel it

i think i might try a service next cant hurt????!!!

cheers
