you can cut down a standard plate. BUt there must be 10mm gap between any lettering and teh edge of the plate.

That is taking into account that you have standard spacing to start off with. This is as far as i am aware. The rules seem to change every week tbh

its a question that difficult to answer, as there does have to be a 10mm.. so this would appear to mean that if you had a few '1's then the plate length could be shorter..
but, the regs refer to a BS standard and while its not directly specified it does indirectly link to a siize of plate..
IMO a shorter plate would likely cause issue.

At the end of teh day with numberplates...just deal with it. Small ones dont look good. Wierd fonts dont look good. England flags dont look good. Just get a normal numberplate, in legal lettering, no one will think any less of you, and its the only way you will safely be legal. Police will ALways be able to find a fault with your numberplate else.

i have a small front numberplate (exact same size as the plastic plynth that holds it), spacing is legal, but obviously its smaller (width not height), never ever been stopped, and tbh it does look good, gives the LCR a more aggressive look....it passed first MOT with it on, but failed the 2nd but doesnt bother me at all
