Carbon-Fibre vinyl?

OK I know this stuff isn't to everyone's tastes but I've got a new splitter to fit to my LCR and before I do that I was considering what it would look like in carbon fibre. Obviously I don't fancy paying heaps for a real carbon fibre one cos it'll just get trashed but I thought about getting some of the carbon-fibre effect vinyl stuff and doing it in that.

Anyone recommend some decent stuff that looks fairly close to the real thing? I did search but couldn't find anyone recommending any brand in particular. I've also seen pics of real carbon splitters but has anyone else done this to a standard, OEM one?

Cheers

Blimey, it's not cheap tho! For a sheet big enough for the splitter I'd need about 180cm I reckon, that's looking like over £100 on ebay as the only 180cm size would be 180x120 :(

I've read about real carbon splitters for less than that on here. :(

I dont think you would be able to wrap the whole splitter in real carbon, The carbon adds about 2mm to the thickness of the item so it might not slide back into place properley, also it is very diffcult to get it to follow tight shapes.
However I am in the process of part wraping mine :D
I'm only wraping the center bit and the outer bit's will be sprayed.
It's not finished yet, it's need a final rub down to get rid of the high spot's then it will be laquired once it's painted.

that is looking nice, fancy doing mine :D

 If I had a pound for everyone who asked that I would be pretty rich
The main problem is that you would have to spray the outer bit's which I been quoted about £80 to do properly, once you then add on the carbon and resin's it works out quite expensive.

I'v not tried it yet but I but so long as you prep the surface properly you could use the vinyl on it.

Well I decided against it in the end as it was looking like getting the £25 plastic splitter covered in carbon-effect wrap was going to cost nearly as much (or more) as getting an actual carbon-fibre splitter. Can't really justify it given the number of potholes and speedbumps taking chunks out of the thing. If I was going to be making a show car out of my LCR I'd maybe get another one, wrap it and keep it for shows but right now I'd sooner put the cash towards new dogbone mount and bushes and a new TIP :)

Cheers for the responses guys, is appreciated. That splitter looks sweet, D.K :)

Can't remember exactly but I did a search in the Leon Mk1 forum for "carbon splitter", there were a few posts in some of the resulting threads that said they come up from time to time on ebay and the like. Some folks have found ones originally intended for cup cars.

Yes its done in one peace.

I was there helping in the whole process.
Its easy if you have patience, a heating gun and youre used to get involved with such things!

If you do an error its fine!. You just heat it up, take it off and put it back again! It does not mess the texture.

You only have to take care not to overheat this stuff and stretch it really cos thats the only way that you may damage a bit its texture, localy...

;)

I was very surprised with the result. The mirrors are a bit difficult to do, due to all those curves.

I am tempted to get a sheet and fit on my cars roof!
