hey.

quick question.. im looking to buy a MK4 cupra which is an 08 plate with 4,000 miles on the clock, its currently been sitting a dealers since before xmas , but when i went to have a look at it the other day, i saw that the brake pads wernt sitting flush with the disk. :(

The top of the pad was not in contact with the disk but the bottom half was.

Does anyone know what could of caused this ? what would i need to do to put it right ? is it going to cost me a fortune if i end up buying it?

any help is much appreciated. :)

Ah, I think you've seen what panicked me about my Toledo. From the outside, it does look like only part of the pad is touching the disc.

It's actually the way the pads have been profiled, there's a bevelled edge that is cut at an angle. The actual braking surface is completely flush with the disc. I can't find why they're cut like that, perhaps some noise reduction? But even my brand new EBC pads fitted the same way, and there's nothing wrong.

Although I'd perhaps describe it as the inner edge is touching and the outer edge is off the disc? I might be describing something different.

The safest bet is to check that both sides of the car look the same, the chances of exactly the same fault on both sides are slim.

You mean like this Slimy? You can see the edges are bevelled.

This is a TT pad for my 312mm conversion, and the first thing I noticed was the bevelled edge because I used to file a slight bevel into pads years ago to cut down on noise after fitting.

If this is what you are seeing Mouse then nothing to worry about! :D

I think the guy who said noise Reduction above may be right...I don't think my red stuff pads had that edge, and for the first hundred miles or so they madea right squeak!!

Thanks for your messages, this is not what im seeing tho.

Basically, the what i can see is that it has more pad at the bottom and not the same level of pad at the top.. if you get me. lol. sorry. but im still half asleep and probably explaining this all wrong.

Apologies.

Yes the bevelled pads are to avoid screeching noise while braking.

If you have uneven wear on the pads some of the caliper pistons might be stuck a bit and need servicing too.

Yep, that's exactly it! And while it looks logical as you hold the pad, when it's on the car it looks really scary!

Anyhow, looks like it's not what mouse is seeing, so I'll shut up now...

Yeah, sounds like it`s a different thing he is seeing...

Mouse, the calipers on the Cupra are 4-pot so it could be that 1 or 2 of the pistons have seized? After 4k though?
