Hey Guys,

Car started today - then cut out straight away. This happens every time I turn the key.
When I turn the key HALF way, the dashboard lights don't even show up. In fact... no lights on the dashboard show at all.

Here's a LOG:

Obviously some errors are 'fake' errors... ie: the rear electric windows - they clearly do work.
So there's a fault somewhere what's mis-communicating with other things?

Can anyone advise on what steps to take? What Are the solutions to the above?
Also - what's the main reason for the car cutting out?

Thanks chaps

oh - edit: It's VCDS not VAG-COM.

It is rather important, so if anyone can shed any light.... I will love you forever :D

Thanks.

There's a few too many mentions of 'immobilizer' in there for my liking, it suggests it's the immobilizer disabling everything. There's a few thread on here for the same sort of thing, have a look at what people have done.

Did the battery go dead or really low on voltage - you have something major wrong that so many modules are not talking. It would appear to me that the CAN Gateway module is acting up which is why I asked about battery voltage. But, we should also be seeing some low voltage complaints.

Did something else happen? Has someone taken the car apart and tried to get it back together?

I've searched the forum - it seems the car is acting as if this is the fault.... however - the "key" symbol isn't showing on the dash (maybe cos the dash is not lighting up at all?)

Bruce, The batteries not been dead. All electrics work fine.. lights.. wipers.. radio.. heaters..

we're the second owners of the car... the first owner was the Directors wife of Tesco's - serviced every 5K miles... looked after... so I don't think anyone's tried taking it apart and putting it back together? (any way to find out?)

The fact that the instrument cluster cannot be reached at all is a bother to me. Could be the instrument cluster is toast.

The fact that CAN gateway cannot talk on the databus to the instrument cluster might be another clue that the instrument cluster is toast.

What I would start doing is to unplug the instrument cluster, clear the codes, then rescan to see if unplugging the cluster would clear up anything.

Possibly you should try what we call a cold boot - disconnect the battery - let all modules go off line for 20-30 minutes - then reconnect and re-scan. It may be that life is just seriously confused in this car!

Cheers Bruce, will try that tomorrow!

I've been recommended to try a key fob reset - this MIGHT work.

However, we got 2 keys with this car... BOTH have remotes on.
Now - all the resetting instructions, clearly state a key without the remote is needed....

The keys contain an immobiliser chip, the remote door locking is just a courtesy thing and not part of the immobiliser. I've got one flip key and one standard key, but both contain the immobiliser 'thingy'.

The reset thing means that you use the key in the door to unlock the car, rather than pushing the remote button.

ah :( We'll leave that one then.

Guess I'll just have to wait till tomorrow for vag-com to come back round and try the above methods.

Tell ya what - I never had this much trouble with a 'crappy pre 2000 car without the mod cons!'

Oh!!

My friend (with vagcom) was planning on recoding the immobiliser tomorrow... but just mentioned we can't do it - because we don't have the PIN number for the car.

any way around this?

p.s - sorry for all the Questions :(

No way around it but why do you think it is needed?

With all the errors you are showing on this car, I would not jump to the conclusion that this is a key issue. The immobilizer does not talk to the scan tool. The Instrument cluster does not talk to the scan tool. The CAN gateway is complaining about an error on the internal databus and this leads you to the conclusion that you have a problem with a key? I think not.

You have a communications problem amongst the modules in the car. The more I think about it the more I feel a full system reset is warranted by disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes or so. Let all the modules reset and come back into communication. See if you can talk to all modules at that point. Then clear codes and then try to start the car. The systems are thoroughly confused or compromised at the moment. If compromised, you have a lot more work ahead of you and re-coding keys is not the solution.

Thanks Bruce,

I'm not saying it's the Key issue. In fact, as mentioned - I have no idea what the issue is. But searching all corners of the internet keeps throwing up different solutions etc

Before we do anything tomorrow, I'll reset the car like you mentioned. Then take things from there.

Hey Bruce,

'Reset the battery' as mentioned. Checked the fuse as others have mentioned.

Still in the same situation.

Just looking at unpluggin the instrument cluster now... Checking online for 'destructions' - but if anyone can help... much appreciated!

The Autoscan did not change at all? That surprises me.

Well, I guess you try the instrument cluster.

If that makes no difference in the Autoscan results, then ....... you need to get it towed to someone who can start checking lots of things cause there is something radically wrong.

Hey Bruce,

The only thing in the autoscan what changed - was a few extra errors... low voltage ones - which is to be expected if we've tried turning the key several times.

Guess it'll be a phone call to a garage tomorrow :(
