I've read all/most of the threads on tyres and have decided to go for the Kumho KU31 all round.

I am a total novice at this so please can you help us out on selecting the right type (and forgive the ignorance)...

My current tyres read: 205/45 ZR 16 83 W

So on black circles.com I have selected:

205 width
45 profile
16 tyre size
W/Y/Z rating

This comes out to be 205/45 R16 W (87).

My question is what does the Z mean??? Why is it missing from the website choices? Here, have a look:

http://www.blackcircles.com/order/tyres/search (5th down).

Are these Kumho's ok for my car? (130 tdi sport)

Cheers

yes, the 205/45/16 refers to the fitting size so they will fit your wheels. The ZR or W or whatever is the speed rating. Not sure on the 87 bit, but I think its something to do with extra load sidewalls or something.

I run on the KU31s - thats the exact size and ratings on my tyres, so they will be fine on your car (mines an FR TDI) I got mine for £66 a tyre fitted.

Tyre speed ratings

V = up to 149 mph
W = up to 168 mph
Y = up to 186 mph
Z = over 186 mph

Load ratings

83 = 487 kg per corner
87 = 545 kg per corner

Legally on a 130 Sport or an FR TDi you must have V rated 83 load rating OR BETTER.

I got my Kuhmo's for £46ea fitted :D but that was friends and family price! Would've gone Toyo's again, but I found a bulge on one of my front tyres on a friday afternoon and nowhere had Toyo's in stock, so price and availability won over for the kuhmo's!

They've done pretty well so far!
