really hope someone can help.

Ok the title is odd i know but thats the only way i can describe it......sitting comfortably? then i shall begin.

when the roads were snow deep, i struggled to get the ibiza up a hill to my house. thus wheel spinning, this is the point i first heard this crunching spinning sound.

it next happend a few weeks later slowly driving off my drive way.

lastly it happend last night driving home from work, in traffic 1st gear just letting the engine pull the car forward. the crunching spinnning sound began and it went on for longer than ever before, i placed my foot on the brake and the brakes seemed alot less effective and the noise got louder.

to add, my brakes have been squealling when comming to a stop and they squeak also when iam not pressing them and simply turning either way?

sorry for the essay.

thanks.

mine made this noise in the snow when the wheels span, i presumed it was either the tcs or abs not enjoying the snow.

It doesn't do it in the wet though

Just remembered, I had a similar issue months ago, and TCS/ABS light came on. Think had a dirty ABS sensor. Kepts driving and the noise was terrible. Pulled over, put handbrake on, rang my mate (a mechanic), set off and all was fine :D

whats odd is i have had no lights TCS or ABS lights.

ordered an abs sensor and new brake pads, fitting tonight.

the noise is so intermitant, it comes and goes as it pleases!

i didnt get around to fitting the new parts yesterday, brake pads weren't here in time.

its deffintaly ABS related, i gave it some gas lastnight (in a empty carpark) of the mark the wheels spun abit and the noise kicked in. but stopped when the wheels gained traction.

It's THE ABS sensor :)

It's your traction control trying to even things out at the front - ok so it doesn't need to, but it thinks it does. Check the sensors. Replace them if Vag-Com shows a fault.

Yes, definatly the abs sensor both sides went in my Mk4 Golf and eventually in the snow the light came on (possibly when using abs more times than others)

Vag-com often won't show a fault if the ABS light is not on your dash. I took mine to VW and they said i'd need a new ABS pump at the cost of £600. Researched into it and its a common problem on vags, purchased 2 ABS sensors at the cost of about £45 each and got them fitted by a mate in about 20 minuites. Ran fine after that.

Makes me laugh when dealers automatically assume the problem is with a major component. Just so they can charge stupid amounts!

Autoworld told my mate that he needed to remove steering rack etc to fix my clutch peddle, as that's how they do it. I gave him the guide on here and took about a hour!

Same with a lass at work, car sales sold her a car and disconnected MAF, ran like a pig and was told major engine parts needed replacing. Her neighbour looked at it and plugged the MAF in and all's fine!

Ok, so one is a "con" the other is "over-exaggeration", but end of the day, anything to make more money

hi m8 mine has exactly the same noise when i first set of when in 1st and very slightly as i change to 2nd and mine only used to do this whenever my car wheel spun in the snow and now even tho the snows gone the noise is still there i am guessing its driveshafts as i have slipped both boots off on mine cleaned the old grease out and re-greased the cv joints and its quietened it no end but the noise is still there but much quieter so ime replacing both shafts shortly, mite be wrong m8 just a thought

Low and behold, it was the ABS sensor. took the wheel off etc, tapped the sensor and it frayed and came apart in my hand.

popped the new one in, my mate ran his snap-on fault reader thing and it showed an intermitent ABS sensor.

Thanks to everyone who chipped in. appreciate it. Love this forum.
