My cambelt snapped on Sunday :-(
its in the garage but they haven't stripped anything yet any ideas on costs worst case, is it worth fixing car has 80k an I got belt done at 70k. Other choice Is stripping for parts, got revo stage 2 with all mods, Wats it worth in bits?
Any help or guestimates welcome

if its 1.8 20v then you will need all 20 valves and they probably cost 15-20 quid each. new timing belt kit, head gasket, probably looking about 500 quid excluding labour which is about 5 hours so another 200. id fix it if it was me. thats just my opinion though.

may be less than that as ive just found inlet valve for it for 7.50 each on ebay. ill check exhaust ones. also 7.50. so 150 for valves, 50 for timing belt, 50 for head gasket and 200 to 250 for labour.

Can't over tension it, its an automatic tensioner.

However quite a few people when changing the belt don't change the damper under the tensioner and seen quite a few of these over the years leak and it looses the tension and slips.

Spoke to garage today, after reading a thread on here got him to check front engine mount and its snapped so that caused engine to tilt back and master cylinder has pressed onto cam cover. The guy said I prob have too much power which is why it snapped (212bhp an 256 torques)
Not sure if to just replace or uprate front engine mount and would it matter if only the front was uprated as can't afford to do them all.
Once again cheers for help guys

if the mounting is at the front it takes alot more force than the others when accelerating. the engine and gearbox ones basically just take the weight of the engine and stop it moving round corners. definately worth upgrading that one if it stops this happening again. you gettin it fixed?

just a little update.
the cambelt wasnt snapped! dont know why the garage said it was!!
decided to let a friend of a friend to do all work to it as hes a vw mech for dealer.
hes told me timing and cam where well out and belt has been torn so put new one on and it had no compression.
head is off now and ive got 12 bent valves :-( all of the exhaust and the 2 middle inlet ones.

only thing im not sure of now is if its worth getting it ported and polished before going back on, what would it cost and mostly would i notice any gains?

my front mount fell out, causing my engine to twist . mine slipped 7 teeth, luckly didnt do any damage to my engine. vw specialist said the engines can run fine around 30degree out of timing.

The mount come apart or the bracket broken off?
as for too much power, laughable..

Mine still runs stock bracket with considerably more power than yours
