Hi guys, Ive recently purchased a MK1 03' LCR with absolutely whacked out discs and pads all round. Now obviously the standard setup is all Brembo which right now is way outta budget but the brakes need to be done ASAP.
I just wanted some guidance/ advice on what other setups are cheaper and recommended?
Im quite sure the pads dont have to be brembos, i was looking at Ferodos (which arent far off price wise from Brembos) or a slightly cheaper option of EBC green stuff pads. The discs however ive heard HAVE to be Brembo, is this true? Obviously there quality brakes so well worth the price but way out of my price range atm.
Can anyone recommened a good setup for my car, reasonable in price and recommendation on where to prchase them? Im really in a pickle right now, dont know much about any other brake setups, im sure a lot of LCR owners have changed theirs so an advice would be much appreciated, PLEASE HELP!!!!! thanks guys.

Btw guys my LCR has had a stage 1 revo map done on it and according to previous owner is at around 260 horses. Dont know if that makes any difference but i thought id chuck it in. I dont drive stupid, ive bought it because ive always wanted one since i started driving and dont intend to rag the sh*t out of the car in any way.

Thanks in advance guys.

Thank for the reply mate, yeh so ive seen the discs are a killer on the wallet man. Brembo discs are like 170 EACH, way outa ma budget. ECB discs are 160-170 for the pair which is more in budget. Obviously stopping power with brembo setups are 2nd to none but its a sacrifice i have to make im afraid:( no matter how much i want them, its just not feasible for me at the moment.

Any recommendations at a reasonable price?

EBC discs are much cheaper than brembo. Ferodo ds2500 pads are the best value for money.

Cheers guys, wow Calum mate is that a whole front and rear setup? That is bloody cheap if so. Exactly the kinda thing i was looking for tbh mate, ur a lifesaver. Did u request the curved 8 grooved disk or is that what they sent to u as standard? On that listing though they dont say what make the discs are, is that gona b a problem in the long run if ther just cheap aftermarket discs? obviously the ferodo DS2500 pads are top notch but slightly worried about the disks road life not knowing wt they are?

Yeh cheers Danny mate, appreciate the input!

I spoke to them about the discs and they said they were OEM spec, a few other on here have had discs from them before and were happy with them, do a search for CRN and a few posts/threads should come up. As i don't have them yet (will be coming next week) i can't comment fully but as said other people seem to be more than happy and a few have also used them on track with no problems

They can do just about any design you want and in a way the 8 grooved discs i ordered were custom as they don't stock them so were having to draw the design up for me then get them made (at no extra cost). If you wanted the 8 grooved discs that i got just mention my name (Calum McGregor) and they should know what your talking about.

Oh yeh and that's for discs and pads all round, great price tbh

CRN use EBC discs and then machine grooves into them. I used to use them before getting my 2-piece set-up from badger 5, and I couldn't fault them for normal driving; on track they got a bit hot a bit quick; but most single piece discs will!

good to hear gents, the pads alone are worth about £170ish i think so thats discs front and back (with any pattern you want) for £180, can't complain

not sure it is EBC discs though as the guy just said they were OEM spec, i asked if they could do them with brembo discs but he said they can't use them as they don't like them CNC'ing their discs and reselling them on, never asked about the EBC discs but i would have thought he would have mentioned it if they were ?

If they are OEM spec discs then they've probably taken a set of normal discs (i.e. any you'd get from a motor factors) and grooved them. They may have less quality than EBC/Brembo but coupled with the DS2500, I think the system will work well.

yeh i think that's exactly it mate, as you said i'm more than happy to put them on mine as i know DS2500 pads work well with OEM discs in general on various cars so it's all good in my opinion, if i was going to track the car then i would defintely get EBC/Brembo as you would only really notice the difference when pushing really hard but i'm not so for road use they will be more than adequate and can't grumble with the price at all

just looking forward to getting them next week now as my wear indicators on the now !

Aah thank you so much guys, your help has been so really very helpful. OEM discs as standard would be fine by me but if as Danny is saying theres a chance they could be ECB than for that price thats an absolute bargain, ECB do quality discs for the LCRs. Guys what would you recommend i go for on the discs than? Callum u obviously went for the 8 grooved design, is that what i should go for aswell or keep tham standard? Im not too clued up with regards to disk patterns etc but if CRN are willing to machine groove them at no extra cost, why not hey? Any recommendations?

Thank again Callum, Danny & Jay, lifesavers guys honestly, wouldnt have had a damn clue otherwise. I called up Seat through my garage for TRADE price on a full setup and was getting quotes of around 900 quid. Considering ive just purchased my LCR and its currently in the garage and im spending another 1k on styling and mainteance im a bit broke to say the least.

disc pattern is completely up to you mate, it doesn't make a great deal of difference especially on the road, just stay away from drilled discs and you can't really go wrong

grooved will wear down the pads a wee bit quicker but the theory behine them is that they help stop the pads glazing up and can also help expel water and dirt from the disc/pad (as i said though you would be hard pushed to notice this on the road unless your driving like a nutter)

being honest i just went for the 8 grooves as i like the look of them

Alright then cheers buddy. I dont drive like a nutter at all, granted yeh i like to put ma foot down once in a while (who with an LCR doesnt, that mid range torque, especially on mine with a revo remap is addictive) but theres a limit, i dont do anything stupid like redline, double clutch etc so i might aswell just keep the discs bog standard how they come, what do you think? If it mean keeping them standard will give my pads more road life than that sounds good to me.

Calum thanks again buddy, your a star mate. When i eventually purchase them il deffo chuck in your name, let them know you've recommended them, nice one dude!

weight is the enemy
I've had 2 sets of discs from CRN over the past few years and couldn't recommend them highly enough. They'll talk to you for ages over the phone to make sure you get what you need. After I had a set of DS2500 only last me 2 track days they sold me the new formula yellow stuff pads which have been very good.
And you might even get a bit of a discount if you talk to them in person. Ask for Olly

Guys ive just been told by Badger 5 that the Ferodo pads dont come in the right thickness for the rear brakes & that there not recommened, so much so that user ibizacupra from Badger 5 doesnt even sell them to his customers. He has a full blown 600bhp Ibiza cupra track car and says that the standard pads are absoutely fine cz they dont do the work. The front brakes do all the work therefore ferodos or brembos come highly recommended. According to him, Ferodo dont make the correct pads for the rear LCR brakes., the thickness isnt right. Ive just been told this so thought id let you in on it. Any ideas guys?

Call up CRN and ask for grooved discs but with standard pads. Bill is right in what he is saying, the front does all of the work so normal rear pads will be just as effective. I can't comment on the pad thickness of the rear DS2500's but Bill knows what he's on about :)

You might even get the package cheaper with OEM pads!

yeh he's right mate the pads on the rear for the DS2500's are only about 4mm think or something (half the thickness of the fronts i think), the way i see it as the rears do under half the work that the front does then they should wear fairly evenly so will both need replaced around the same time so it's no real issue imo

either way you can't complain considering the price and you might get the package a bit cheaper if you go for standard rear pads ??
