Sorry typed it out wrong - you can get about 140bhp out of the pd100! so your prob look @ about 110 bhp out of the 1.4tdi !
as for insurance i searched on - go compare! it just happened that egg was cheapest!
Its the 84bhp one, but cuz i have got the ZR throttle body and the derestricted cabble its pushin the 100bhp or so im told. Good car but not good on the mpg side of things. Only getting about 30 mpg = not good enough.

30 mpg is very low, unless your thrashing it everywhere, or doing really short trips. I would suggest your car might be due a good service, could also be lamda sensor fault etc. I used to get 36-38mpg.

I would have the thought the 1.4 tdi would feel more livley than your 25 in the mid-range which is prob what you will end up using the most in every day driving. Wont sound as nice though
The 1.9 tdi has a big punch and grin factor but is it worth over £3k on insurance prob not.

I would have the thought the 1.4 tdi would feel more livley than your 25 in the mid-range which is prob what you will end up using the most in every day driving. Wont sound as nice though

The 1.4 k series is a very rev hungry engine, 16v, twin cam, they used it in caterhams, and the 1.8 version in the elise. Belting it up to 7000rpm its a fun little engine, but it has **** all low down
I think personally, he should stick with the 25 for now, and wait until he can afford a 1.9tdi 130.

Thats good advice as the 130 does have something in the 30-70 mph field which is worth the wait if he can get the insurance down a grand or so. Trouble is you know what its like when you get "wanna new car" fever.

Yup head gasket failure finished mine off
Every engine has its flaws, hopefully the the chinese have got it sorted, they started by changing the name to N series
MLS gasket improves the situation, but its not a cure. They can still fail. The problem is that the engine uses 10 really long bolts to hold the engine under compresssion, however, this method doesnt give the same compression load as a more conventional design, this is made worse on the 1.8 engines where the block is less stiff. So the head can move around on top on the block, MLS gasket can compensate for this. Then there is problems with shitty cooling system they fitted, liner heights, piss poor assembly standards etc etc.
It was a very advanced lightweight engine, perhaps too advanced for cheap mass production.

yeah i agree got nothing bottom end but when i get to about 3500-4000rpm you do get a kick where it winds up lol.

Yeah i got the "Wanna new car" fever i mean been thinking about getting rid of the rover for ages but not been 100% what to get i mean was going for a 106 then a classic mini then a Saxo then a ibiza. think i made the right choice of car now tho!
I have had no probs with head gasket, as long as you don't thrash from cold and keep it serviced they can last for ages, but it is always in the back of my mind.
do a quote on elephant for a 1.9 TDi 100, add 2 named drivers who have no claims, crashes or fines and have been driving over 15 years... make their names and dateofbirth up!
then see what the quote comes out at

it doesn't matter if they never drive the car, but each driver knocks about 1k off the insurance

Another thing you may wish to consider is the reg change in March. This will mean more Ibiza’s traded and a better chance to find a decent 1.4 Tdi. Also this will give you another couple of months to save for the insurance.
One of the best things about the MK4 is that the design was sports for all the models and theres really not a lot of visual difference. A second hand set of 17” FR or Cupra wheels and a few non cost mods like de-badging and running strip removal can really help..
Performance upgrades and remaps will of course hit you on the insurance pocket but can come later when you have the cash.

Yeah thats what i have been thinking about the mk4 i mean there are things that can be changed to make it look more sporty! I love the FR wheels they are sooooo nice!
I am not rushing into buying a car just cuz i have got the money so i am sure if nothing crops soon i can wait until march!
