Only really noticed it over xmas and new year and now with the snow. When my wheels wheel spin on ice or snow it makes a grinding noise. Is this the traction control kicking in or is it something more serious?

mine does it ... its the brake pads on the discs trying to stop the wheel spinning from what i can tell.

Yeah its at low speed like in 1st or 2nd gear just wheel spinning in the snow or ice. Glad there nothing wrong with it as been playing on me mind for a few weeks.
Seems more like its coming from the left hand side wheel more than anything else.

As my remap is 220bhp and 340lbs of torque am not getting any grip really in 1st or 2nd gears even tho I know the roads are wet and greasey. Apart from the tyres of course is there anything I can do to get the power on the road in these gears straight away and avoid wheel spin and wheel bounce?

Does the traction control really work that way?
I thought it could only cut the throttle to stop the wheels spinning, not apply brakes.
If it did apply the brakes wouldn't the brake lights need to be illuminated? I have never seen a car powering out of a junction with wheels attempting to spin and brake lights flashing or even permanently on.
Also I would have thought that a braking wheel has just as little traction as a wheel with too much power applied to it

In a similar way the ESP program applies the inside rear brake to help stop a car losing grip that is cornering too fast - this doesn't result in the brake lights showing either

I was of the understanding that the pre-facelift just cut the power for traction control but the facelift using the XDS system does actualy apply brake to the spinning wheel.
Smoke from the brakes indicate they are being used (especially after spending 40 mins trying to get up a hill recently)
In the snow I heard what sounded like my ABS pump working to stop the wheels spinning, as mentioned, when the ESP is activated by cornering too hard the brake lights don't illuminate and I assume that it works the same, unless the ESP control box sounds the same as the ABS pump?
