I Need Tyre Advice!

Hello all. You MK2 people seem very focussed on tyres and know alot about them, not alot of info seems available in the MK1 section.

I have done a fair amount of research between 2 tyres that I was interested in, Sessanta's & T1-R's both of which I have gone off of due to the reportedly soft sidewalls. IMO there's nothing worse than this and a double entry feel to a corner is scary to say the least. Out of the two, I would say that the Vredestein had the more positive reviews but there are a fair amount of reports that this tyre can't plant the power down on a dyno which may sound silly, but this is important to me as I like to check things are going right when tuning.

Now, I read the reviews back to back with a review about my current tyre, FK452 and to be honest, these sound a little better even though they're cheaper but they're struggling to put the power down on my LCR quite a bit.

R1Rs at £200 per tyres are way over budget and to be honest GY F1 Assy are too but if they're much better than the above, I may have to bite the bullet.

So what do I do? Should I be considering another tyre or get a new set of Falkens which seem to hold their own among some premium competition? All I read about Yoko Spec 2's, Bridgestone RE050 (or whatever they're called), ot Conti Sport Contacts is that they're crap...so i'm really stuck.

I should note that since the last time I changed the tyres, I have a stiffer engine mount so that may help with traction.

Thanks for the info in advance.

R1R's are 14o a tyre mate for 225/40/18 ;)

What size are you after?

i've always liked the goodyears, i've had toyos once and both of them split on the inside, how they never went bang i'll never know. I have pirellis on the cupra and i'm not sure what i''l change them too, possibly goodyears or maybe something else. I prefer a tyre thats great in the wet rather than great in the dry.

Sorry guys, i'm in need of 225/40/18.

Poverty, where did you find that? I am sure I typed in R1R on Camskill and it came up 199 inc VAT.

Here we are

Steve that's what I am worried about. I've read a few things and it all comes back to having really soft sidewalls which either lead to baldness on the outer edges or as you say, splits. This is another reason why I want a stronger sidewall. The Vreds are a weird one, it concerns me that they're a little poop on the dyno so I am doubting their on-road ability too.

I hear that F1's are 'the best' fast road tyre so I guess that makes the R1R between road and track.

also i had two rear wheel bearings changed under warranty due to excessive droning from the rear, turns out it wasn't the bearings but the tyres. It might just be me but i would need a very good reason to buy another set.

I think maybe they've gone down in quality. I had a set when they first came out on my old Civic and they were superb, really really good but then agaib my car weighed under 1 tonne by the time I stripped it and didn't have turbo amounts of torque so I doubt whether I'd have felt any flex. I can;t really compare TBH, LEON and stripped Civic are two different machines.
