I have NEVER seen the wheels removed from any car for the MOT.

The MOT tests are designed to be carried out without removing any parts of the car.

Just sort of thought they would have to, to check them properly.

O'well... just shows what I know.

You live and learn... :)

In a fit of paranoia... Just wiped a front / rear wheel off and besides the usual over tight bolts fitted by the tyre fitter, they came off fine (looked like he might have even used copper ease on the wheel/hub facing). Last thing I wanted was trying to get a wheel off in a dark / wet day (weather always seems to be crap when you get a puncture) & finding my wheel welded on! Also went mad and applied a coat of wheel guard to the inside of the wheel (sad eh).

What about car's with steel wheels do they not have to take them off so they can see the front brakes discs?

It's a test requirement that no part of the car is altered or replaced during the test, including the wheels. If they did, you have a right to challenge the MOT result.

You should find that all cars, steel wheels or not, have some facility to visually check the brakes. As MikeO said, you can see an awful lot of the car when it's up in the air and you're underneath.

Then again, the MOT is a complete waste of time anyway. There is no way I'd consider an MOT pass as being a mark of being roadworthy.

Sorry, I got a bit off-topic there...

Taking the wheels off was the first thing I did with mine. Ever since I bought a Golf that had been fitted with the wrong wheels, the hole in the middle (?) was an nth too small, so I had to use a gear puller to remove the wheels! Luckily they were steel wheels so I didn't care about the damage.

Of course, that didn't help me when my locking nut key got stripped and I was left with one wheel that wouldn't get unbolted...SEAT lock nuts are awful...
