Mechanically both will be the same the Golf will cost more to buy than the Leon and depending on spec not as well equipped. Golf has a slightly better interior and that is pretty much it. Personally I find the Golf a bit too bland and the Leon allot more stylish.

Some say leons are better to drive, magazines ooze praise for the way the golf drives, go figure. For me it has always been a common sense decision. The leon is better value for money (fact), more stylish (matter of opinion), more exclusive, surprisingly strong residuals. No brainer.

Had one of these new golfs as a hire car last week.
Drove really well BUT the heated rear window interfered with the radio, the wipers screeched and there were a few rattles. I think the Leon would probably get my vote especially as you will save a few £K.:p

thanks everybody....

and reply to the second post.....the goverment takes about triple the normal tax for cars above 1600cc and only 36% on cars below....the golf does come with the TSI 160HP but at much higher price

whats the diffrenece between the 1.4TSI with 122hp and 160hp?? any mpg differnces?

I didn't know they did a 1.6 DSG Leon. I have had a 140 bhp TDI DSG Leon and now have a petrol FR DSG Leon. I find the FR a lot smoother and seems to predict the gear changes better than the TDI. There allays seemed to be a delay on the TDI used to scare me to death when pulling away at roundabouts as you think nothing is happening then wooosh your gone.

1.4TSi 122 just has a turbocharger and the 160 has a turbocharger and supercharger mpg is about 1-2mpg better on the 1.4TSi 122.

I've gone down exactly the same route as tedmorbed and have to agree the petrol FR DSG wins hands down (provided you don't do high mileages as MPG not brilliant..)

As for choosing between a Leon or Golf, you'll probably only get one answer on a Seat forum...Leon all the way..[B)]

Totally agree Phil, FR is a great car , but will of course be a bias on this site ;)

I love my FR but to be honest if i could have stretched to the extra £6k to get the equivalent GTi at the time i probably would - but i just couldnt justify it and glad i didnt.

We had a similar dilemma before buying our first Leon Rob. My wife really wanted a Golf or the new Civic whereas I'd heard good things about the Leon, mostly on SCN tbh..

Once the test drives were done it was the Leon's looks, handling and DSG box that swung it...plus the premium price you pay for a Golf as you mentioned...

Anyway 2 yrs later and no regrets...:D
