Wiring help wanted

I'm trying to wire up some heated washer jets - but I want the jets to be on only when the heated wing-mirrors are on (when the wing-mirror switch is in the middle position).

The jets have a live wire and an earth wire that I want to connect between the wing-mirror switch and the wing-mirror.

1st picture shows the wiring at the back of the heated wing-mirror switch.

In the 2nd picture, the wires from the middle box go to the wing-mirror.

Anyone have any ideas about what colour is what, and where I'd be best making the connection?

Why don't you use a multimeter and see which wire becomes live when you activate the heated rear window/mirror button.

or alternatively - take a feed from the back of the heated window/mirror fuse in the fusebox

multimeter ? the wires to the glass in the mirror to the connector and tap into them ?

found a diagram of original fitment

pin 1 (brown wire)
connect together then to an Earth point, longitudinal member right, front (chassis?)

pin 2 (red)
connect together 2-pin connector, black, in engine compartment >>> red/blue wire pin2 6-pin connector, red, on left end wall >>>> black/red wire / pin b / fuse 19 10a

19 - SB19 - Fuse 19 on fuse holder B 10 A - Reversing lights, heated jets




how they activate/work when fitted standard i couldnt tell ya the principle but if you wanna copy of the diagram just gimme a shout

I have them standard, and I'm pretty sure they're on whenever the engine is. I very very rarely use my heated rear window, and I know they come on seperately from it. Basically, when its cold they are on

I have often wondered if its related to the temperature sensor i.e. they come on below 4 degrees

like spooky magic looking at the wiring in basic terms i must confess and there maybe other aspects in the connections to think about i guess

be worth a check if you ever find yaself under the bonnet with a multimeter one day ;)

proably easier to stick one on a 12v battery overnight and see if it melts :p

Cheers for the replies guys. Went out with the multimeter and tested various wires in the middle purple box.

I can now confirm that the white wire is the live and the brown wire is the earth. The white wire is only live when the mirror switch is in the middle position :thumbup:

So, I'm going to solder my connections to the wires in the purple box - seems a better and neater place to make the connection rather than behind the switch where I'd have to strip wires and risk messing up the operation of the switch.

If I was you, I'd give up on the idea of only having them on when the mirrors are being heated. As said already, these get power as soon as the alternator is charging, or maybe even as soon as the ignition is switched on, they will need to be wired in this way as the heaters will be very low wattage and will have been "sized" for that type of operation.

Please please please source the correct crimps (looks like a deutsch connector) and re crimp the wires. you shouldn't solder into/onto the purple box connector. If you want to solder them or cant source the crimps, then "un-plug" the wire, window strip solder the new wire in and cover the join/splice with some heatshrink.

You can proabbly get the ccontacts form rs/farnell (we do some looms for a rally version of the skoda fabia VRS and in emergencies we can source spare contacts from rs normally).

That seems to be, for DIYers a big problem as ETOS lists all the plug and socket pins - but does not tie them up to series of connector shells and where they are used in the car. I think that VAG supply dealers with a spares selection of all the plug and socket pins used - and the person doing the repair just swops like for like. Its good fun removing these sorts of connector pins in a non destructive way!

They are a bit of a nightmare, I had to modify the connecting plug between my doors to route 12 guage speaker cable through.

I added the Audi "lane changing" or " 3 flashes" offical mod to my B5 Passat and that involved de-populating one connector and loading all the wiring to a new connector. Small drills, selection of dress making pins, tweezers and small pliers + lots of patience is needed.
