Clutch in cold weather

I noticed the other day while driving that there is a slight clunking noise when releasing the clutch after changing gear.

Not noticed it before and seemed less noticeable in the higher gears. Car hasn't run much over the festive period so I'm wondering if it's something to do with the cold weather we're currently having?

Additives are fine for modern diesels, Millers diesel ecomax is a good choice and reccomended by many. You can get it for about £10 posted from ebay, i would double dose it the first time you use it.

Mine does it too. I think its because as well as being colder and the engines are always a little rough in the cold, you probably have lights, heater mirrors, rear demister and the fan on full whack to clear the car which means your going to need a little more accelerator when pulling away when cold to counteract the extra pull from the alternator. Just my IMO!

I always start up then clear the car so its ran for 2-3 mins before I drive off and is ok.

also guys, remember in this stupid cold weather, Dieselc Freezes at -15c , so bear that in mins as some areas have dipped below -20c

Also, i can;t believe nobody has mentioned how bad the Ibiza is in the snow. I have the standard tyres on mine and i had to dump my car the other night in the snow as it simply would not go up a simple incline.

I was sitting there really wishing i had bought the Golf Tdi 4 motion i nearly bought instead of my Cupra.

I've been quite impressed with my cupra in the snow. The only problem I've had is when the car bottoms out or the bumper acts as a plough. I've got 215/40/17 rainsports on with about half tread depth and I've passed loads of other cars who were struggling much more than me.

I was wondering about the vdub/audi 4wd system is it actually 4wd on the quattros and 4motions or is it a case of the back wheels only kick in when you loose traction with the fronts. Would like to hear from anyone on how 4motions/quattros handle in the snow.

I would a loved a golf tdi 4motion but they were the wrong side of my price range when it was car buying time!!

its like most 4wd systems, part time 4wd, even landrover freelanders work the same

I've got an old VW Passat B5 4Motion which is actually the Audi Quattro system with a Torsen central differential. The Audi A3 system is just a renamed VW 4Motion system which has a Haldex coupling that brings in the rear wheels after slip has started- so is the 4Motion system in the new Passat. So the Audi Quattro system, Subaru system (this one might be very close to a constsnt 50-50 split) and Honda CR-V systems are the only ones fitted to cars and SUVs I know of that are full time 4WD - I sure that there are a few more. The problem, as said before is, that part time 4WD systems allow you to lose traction before helping you out - which is a bit of a compromise really, thought thta system saves fuel in good conditions. I'd reckon that the next generation of VAG Haldex 4WD systems will be controlled better and be a lot closer to full time 4WD systems in use while still be cheaper to run in good road conditions.

99 times out of a 100, my B5 Passat 4Motion will just move off with no drama at all, so its a shock if you get out of the car and can hardly keep your feet. In extreme icy conditions, like last Tuesday, it felt funny going round a smooth icy corner then proceeded to maintain the normal road speed while moving up the next icy (sheet ice) stretch at about 30 degrees to the correct direction of travel - they do tend to be boringly efficient, you just need to look out for other road users - oh and 4WD does not improve braking at all, something to always bear in mind!(the laws of physics remain intact even in a 4WD world)

One last thing, VW are about or have launched a new pick-up truck in South America - and maybe even in USA and it uses the Torsen Quattro style 4WD system - so it must still be consider better than the "almost" 4WD 4Motion system, remember there is quite a bit of confusion caused here as Audi Quattro Torsen systems were badged Syncro and then 4Motion when used by VW and 4Motion Haldex systems were rebadged as Quattro when used in some Audis.
