I am desperate for some oil (very low!) need to go to Halfords tonight. Its a tdi sport 130 and in front of the manual there is a sticker saying it uses "Special Oil" !!! What the hell does that mean?

Any one got any recommendations on which Oils are best for it? (available at Halfords say)

Many, many thanks!!

need correct spec of oil for the PD engine, you can get from motor factors, main dealer, halfords, eurocarparts, german and swedish - look for 505.01 which is the spec you require.i went to german and swedish and got the FUCHS GT.
Its very important to put that type of oil in on the PD engines

The halfords VW spec stuff comes in a purple bottle.

But, your display flashing oil, means your due an intermediate service. It doesnt mean your running low on oil.

The purple is 15W/40 I think (just checking the halfords website.

I spoke to a nice chap from the dealer who says it needs 5W/40 oil with 505.01 (as you guys correctly mentioned).

I thought when I needed a service it would write "SERVICE" on the digital display? I saw it in the manual

Quantum is what the dealers recomend for PD engines VW Audis

The purple is 5w/30 (well the stuff I got last weekend is) and it says on it SUITABLE FOR VAG PD ENGINES. I think I got 506.01 tho (I'm starting to doubt myself now)

It says 'INSP' for a major service, and 'OIL' for an intermediate one

Been doing some reading into this... Basically the light I get is "Engine Oil Pressure Light". It does not flash, just comes on and its red (can be either red or yellow).

This means that its either oil pressure is too low or low oil. I checked the oil level and its ok.

I read up that cold weather (very cold weather) can cause the oil to not pump well around the engine...leading to low oil pressure. I reckon it is the cold weather causing it as it goes away towards the end of the journey (long journey).

Now getting power steering light coming on!!! AARGHHH!

Do you know the previous history of this car, as it might have the wrong oil in it know - if the correct oil is used I 'd doubt if you would suffer from serious oil sludging up even in this weather - I'd hope that you might try fully synthetic PD oil as that would stay thinner at start up.

just to confirm... if on the display (where it says the current vehicle mileage) when i turn the ignition on to start it, if it flashes the word "OIL" it means i need a service right? and will it automatically go off once serviced?
